The Zune software monitors one or more folders on your hard drive for adds, deletes, and changes. I have tried to make a USB drive one of the monitored devices but the Zune software won't let me so I assume it's hard drive only.
The software processes the changes plus any changes you make while in the software and ultimately updates a database in Local Settings/User/App Data/Microsoft/Zune. From there it will be "sync'd" to the Zune device. Once it's on the Zune, it will stay there until deleted (manually or by re-syncing). I guess the short answer is yes it needs to be on the PC to get it to the Zune. No, they do not need to be on the PC after that unless you plan on making changes, adds, deletes. Be careful though, if you remove them from the monitored folder and have auto-sync on, it will delete them from the Zune device. Hope this helps. If I've got any of this wrong, please correct me. |

All the songs you want are on the Zune and you don't plan on adding anymore (or making any changes) AND if you never sync your Zune then the songs on the Zune should stay there. Basically, you'll be using your PC as a charger for your Zune. |

You must understand a fundamental rule of media players; no matter which one you use (iPod, Zune, Zen, Sansa)
THEY ARE A SLAVE TO YOUR COMPUTER Whatever you change on your Computer will change on you Zune. Now if you stop the autosync and the songs won't stop playing due to them being subscription songs, you should be OK.... Hope that helps... ![]()

Zune doesnt delete stuff unless you ask it too or its auto monitoring, because i have all my music on my zune atm from before i wiped my pc, but i can still sync new content to it. If you want the content back, just reverse sync.

just add sync songs manually... but be really careful and don't complain if you make any kind of mistake and let it remove all of your songs I think the best thing to do in your situation would be to buy an external hard drive, and use your zune normally... a 30 gig external hard drive shouldn't be too expensive... if you can even find one that small.

Question? Can you sync to an external USB drive. I couldn't set up a USB key folder as an Auto-Monitor folder (wouldn't let me) but I have not tried anything else. I have also not tried manual sync. If you can, than an external 30-40G would be a great solution. |
