A BRIEF SUMMARY (Because nobody's going to read this long of a post):
1. Plugged zune into computer. 2. Software could not find zune, then found zune, then decided that zune did not exist. 3. Zune went nuts and wiped its hard drive of all content. 4. Software says that zune cannot hold the 10GB of music and photos the user wants to put back on it, even though it is a 30GB model. 5. User becomes confused. THE LONG VERSION So my Zune has finally decided to take a stand against me. Weird **** is going down and I'm pretty well confused at this point, so I turn to the help of the Zune boards. It all started when I tried to charge it... I plug the zune into by computer and inform the zune software that I would like to add music. "Connect a Zune device.", it says. Well the zune device is already plugged in you mindless machine but okay. I unplug it and re-plug it. 'The Magical Mystery Zune' has now been located, and is ready to sync. Okay! I click sync, nothing happens. It informs me once more to please connect a Zune device. Well, unless you came up with that name yourself, software, I'm going to bet there is already one connected. Unplugging the Zune, I try to turn it on and see what's up. For some reason the backlight is on, but there's nothing on the screen. Well, whatever. I press all the buttons, lock and unlock it, and then in a fit of irritation I hold down the 'play' button for awhile. The backlight turns off, I hear the zune's harddrive crank, and the thing turns back on. Now this would be just fine except that the screen now says something akin to "Please wait, deleting all content..." WAIT WHAT. Now that sucked ass. Nothing I could do though so I let it go about its business while I bitched about having to connect my external harddrive and re-sync everything. As soon as the zune finished removing my carefully maintained music collection from its memory, I plugged it back in to the computer and instructed it to replace everything it just destroyed. It says fine, okay, and goes about doing so. I'm feeling pretty ticked, but relieved that everything will be back to normal soon. Not ten seconds later, however, and the thing informs me that I have "chosen to sync more content than will fit in my zune." I've never seen this message before, namely because it's not possible. The content in every folder it's set to look in collectively totals 10GB, nowhere near the 30 it holds. What the hell, zune. I tried re-selecting the two folders it needs to look in, removing them, adding them, checking the external HD for errors. Zune's still pissed. Restarted the software then the computer and still nothing. It has been "syncing" for two hours, although no content has found its way to the zune and nothing has changed on the computer end. ----- So now what? Anybody know what the heck is up with this thing? I would consider sending it back to Microsoft for repairs, but I'm pretty sure it's not under warantee. I won it in a raffle at a launch event, so I didn't pay for it. Do you think they'd still take it without a receipt or anything...? Last edited by basser : 04-12-2008 at 08:20 PM. Reason: Typos |

hmm.... you can try calling.. MS only ask for serial number.. it might be a hard drive failure... have you done hard reset (deletes music+firmware)? that might help...

Hmm.. Well I did the combo and the zune went back to having a backlight with nothing on it again, then restarted with the same version firmware and my usual background (which is an image from my computer).
Also, I've navigated to "storage" in the zune settings, with some amusing (if upsetting) results: 0 songs 0 pictures 0 videos 27.79 GB used 0 GB free |

did you use the hard reset? as in the one that deletes everything...
"Press and hold the back + center + left buttons and the zune will delete everything it has on it, as well as the firmware." which you should be prompt to connect to your computer zune software to reinstall the firmware..

Thanks for your help in this I know it's probably pretty hopeless... EDIT: Wait I managed to make it work after leaving it off for a minute before trying again. Re-installing firmware now! Last edited by basser : 04-12-2008 at 08:42 PM. |

your zune has to be on while doing the hard reset... if that don't work.. then you have to call microsoft/zune 877-get-zune and see what can they actually do for you.. just ask some questions.. and see if you can send it back to them.. by telling them your Serial number on back of that zune.

Hmm. It's been re-installing its firmware for awhile now. The zune says it's done but the software says it's not.
EDIT: The zune storage breakdown now says: 0 songs 0 pictures 0 videos 21.17 GB used 6.62 GB free Deleting everything on the thing apparently saved me... 6 gigs. Last edited by basser : 04-12-2008 at 08:53 PM. Reason: Now I'm pretty much just updating things for the laughs. This thing is screwed. |

Whoops sorry about the post thing. Not used to these boards.
Anyway cleared content and ended up being told that those 6GB I saved deleting the firmware have now been used up. All 30GB are now being used to store absolutely nothing. Customer service isn't open right now so I'll call them tomorrow. I'm out of warranty but maybe they'll agree to fix it if I tell them they gave it to me in the first place, haha... "But you guys I was at the launch party..." Thanks for the help, sorry for taking up time with a bricked device. :\ |

I don't know if you've fixed or not yet but I had this problem for a short while with my V2 80gb. I erased all content from my Zune using the program, the I disconnected it form the PC and uninstalled and reinstalled the Zune software on my PC. It worked for me. Maybe you could give it a shot.
