Default Zune software doesn't know my Zune is connected

Hi there,

I apologize if this has been asked, but I searched and didn't find this particular question. In the past few days, my Zune is not being recognized by the software. I connect it to the PC and the device turns on and charges. But the software doesn't recognize it. The "connected" icon on the bottom left of the screen reads, "No Zune device connected. Click to see settings." The past two times I've connected the device, I hear the usb sound disconnecting and connecting over and over for long periods of time.

Particulars: My zune is version 2.3 (1145). I use Windows XP. Things I've attempted include trying different USB ports, restarting the zune, restarting the pc, and turning the device off. I have searched briefly for a solution and have not found this particular issue. I've received no error messages. Any help anybody can offer is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

since you said in the past few days, I'm pretty sure you have rebooted/restarted your machine. So besides trying that, I suggest going into the settings of your Zune software and telling it to "Forget the device". This is what the button is actually called, but I forget exactly where. But it is under settings->device. After that, try unplugging and reconnecting the device. If that still doesn't work, maybe try a different USB port.

There's definetly something wrong here. If you hear the usb sound disconnecting and connecting, it means it's actually disconnecting and reconnecting.

Have you tried the zune on a different computer and see what happens? Have you tried other USB device on this computer other than your zune? If you did, what happens. Does the usb sound still repeat itself for a long time?

For zune software to recongnize the zune, the zune must be conected (stablily). Frequent connecting and disconnecting will preven to the zune being recongnized.

What you could do now when you want to sync is to use the wireless sync instead for now until the people in this forum help you fix your problem.

OH OH OH !! I KNOW! ! I KNOW! I KNOW!!!!

THE SAME THING HAPPENS TO ME!!

The problem is that your PC uses too much power, and doesn't have enough power to permanently connect your Zune, which is why it keeps disconnecting and reconnecting.

I fixed this by getting a self-powered USB hub. One cord gives it power from a power outlet, another part is USB and goes into your PC, and it usually has 4 or more USB slots. Get one of those, it fixed the problem for me.

OH OH OH~!! I KNOW I KNOW! why don't you get a new powersupply for your PC before your powersupply kills your PC permanently.

If your computer doesn't have enough power to supply your zune, the zune wouldn't even connect. Heck, the zune wouldn't even connect if the length of wire from the USB chip to the zune is more than 1.2meter.

It's not the power supply, it's just that it's taking too much power. My PC is fine. And my USB Self-powered hub helps the Zune connect just fine.

Alternativaly, you could look for a 2 way usb cable, one that connects to say, an xbox, another part connects to the zune, and another part connects to the computer.

It would have enough power then. I once did that.

Then it is the power supply.

Anyway, try connecting it to a different computer once (even if it doesnt have zune software). Then plug it back into your machine. That happened to me once and this is what fixed it.

The same thing happens to me, except that I have a dualboot configuration, and the Zune fails to connect in XP. However I can sync and connect fine in Vista.
