Ok, i bought the zune the week it came out last year. I haven't had problems with it thus far, until now. About 6 weeks ago the hard-drive on my laptop fried. All of the music i had on there retired to a shady repose, never to be heard of again. Luckily, all of my music was on my zune so i felt i hadn't lost everything. So, i get a new hard-drive, reinstall the old software and my zune wouldn't recognize my computer as the home computer. Easy fix, thanks to the guest zune hack. Ok, now the important part. I recently upgraded the software like any obedient microsoft follower would and i get rewarded with problems up to wazoo! First, all the music i ripped since my hard-drive replacement syncs in strange playlists while the track info is completely wrong. I rectified that by deleting the recent stuff and re-syncing it. It appeared to work just fine. Now, none - i repeat, none of my music will work at all. I get the now infamous " The Item is missing or can't be played " message. I can't completely delete everything on my zune because i would then lose everything i had before my hard-drive crash. I would appreciate any and all help. I feel that microsoft has dropped the ball yet again. I am beginning to wonder who is running the show at Redmond.

You can try the HD hack (found here) but quite a few people have found it doesn't completely work with the new software

1. Reverse sync to backup your zune's content
2. Press and hold the back arrow key + down key, wait for the device to shut off. 3. Press and hold Play/Pause, until the device turns on. 4.When the device starts to boot, Press and hold Back Button+Left Arrow+Center 5. Wait for the Zune to format. 6. Re-sync all your content from the backup.

1 and 6 should be done connected to the software while the rest should be done without a connection

Are you sure you reverse synced correctly?

Well I think so...I dragged all the files to the collection icon to be sync like it said to and it just said 100% on the sync screen and nothing was put on the computer. I also tried to add a new song to see if it would play but after adding it I got the same message that I have with all the others.

Interesting. It would seem as though your media doesn't exist on the Zune anymore.
Your best bet is the HDD hack Quote:

Ok, so somehow when I was listening to my zune the whole audio collection somehow got corrupted. Once I removed the files from my zune I was able to get it to sync and it will play the music that I sync now. I don't know what happened but as soon as I rebuild my library I guess it will be back to normal. I still wonder what caused the corruption.

That's basically what I figured had happened. As for why it happened, I have no idea.

So I thought that everything was working fine after wiping and reinstalling the firmware, but now whenever I try to sync the zune it tries to start syncing but the zune just keeps restarting after about getting about 4 GB sync'd I have no idea whats going on. I am guessing it has somthing to do with the new firmware/software. I am going to try and search around tonight and see if I can find somthing that will work.

It sounds like it might be your hard drive. That could be why it was corrupt. Probably a bad sector somewhere.

You could replace it yourself by buying a new HDD and voiding the warranty, or you could send it to MS (probably the best course)
