Default Thanks everyone

Mr. H: Yep, I've done a few laps around the place already.
Saline: I celebrate my 19th wedding anniversary in June, so I'm not kidding around.
LP: I hope to add some value. I already succeeded in podcasting to myself via XP Home to get around the Zune software limitations. I hope to get a tut up this weekend.
Cameleon: I've only had my Zune for 6 days and I feel right at home.

Welcoming Icy Mt.

It's great to have people with actual computer experience. I know a guy who witnessed the first dialup connection between 2 comps.

Anyways welcome in.

Thanks, Trog. My first modem was and external US Robotics at 1400 baud (1.4 Kbits/s or about 40 times slower than current dialup).

I am so ancient that I have actually sat on the back porch and tilted some beers with one of the nuclear engineers that worked on the Manhattan Project. He was actually there in Chicago when mankind started up the first nuclear fission reaction. He said that they were only 99.9% certain that it wouldn't spread and turn the earth into a new star.

Sweet my friend's dad is a nuclear physicist whom I have reason to believe works on nukes.

The same guy I talked to who saw the first dialup connection also knew how to program in just binary based OSs

Default It's all zeros or ones

My first real code was written for a Commodore 64, as in, 64kb of ram. It was a program to print banners on tractor paper. 100% typed in as machine language, no compiler, no programming wrapper, just a text editor. It had to be done that way to make the code tight enough to fit in 64k. Today's spoiled SDK developer's bloated code makes me want to slit my wrists with a 2GB memory stick.

The first code I got paid for was a written on a hand built development system for the Motorola 6804. 2kB of onboard memory. Talk about tight code. It was for the first dishwasher to use a touch panel instead of mechanical pushbuttons. They told us it wouldn't sell. Everything was stored on 8" floppy disks.

I've done these:
Motorola Machine Language (6800 series)
Intel Machine Language (8088 and prior)
Pascal
Basic
Fortran
C
HTML
Once I got out of college I realized I could make a lot more $$$ converting circuit designs into manufacturable products than I could make programming. I haven't coded anything seriously in 20 years. Unless you count Modicon/Gould Programmable Logic Controllers or HP Visual Basic for test stand programming. I couldn't program myself out of a wet paper bag on anything running Windows. The rep is most undeserved.
