New and need help wth 80gb Zune

Hi, this is Michael, 53, live in DE. Just purchased a new 80gb Zune. Installed teh software, computer settings, and launched but after I plug in the device, all I get is a messages saying device is not connected. I tried all 3 USB ports and booted down 3 times.... all with no success. What am I missing or doing wrong?

I have different player, and this has never been a problem with my zune, but often players won't synch unless turned of and with hold switched on before being connected...then computer boots it into synch mode...usually
