Angry Zune software doesn't support .mp4 playback?

So I've taken a few videos with my HTC/Sprint Mogul and wanted to view them on my Windows XP desktop. My phone saves it's video files in .mp4 format. So lets see; Microsoft WM6 based PPC, Microsoft based desktop, even a Microsoft based MP3 player (Zune) with it's own media player software. This should be fluid!

Fire up WMP11, file->open->video11.mp4. No dice, format isn't supported.

hrm, google search->winamp .mp4 playback->need to download converters, etc, etc. bleh.

Surely with all this hype to push Microsoft's Zune to the front of the pack, this thing has to display .mp4 video's! It even shows .mp4 under it's supported file format settings, and yet again...no dice!

I get this error: C00D1B83. Which tells me to goto this page: http://www.zune.net/en-US/support/we...p_locale=en-US. Which says: "The Zune software can’t play this item because it doesn't support this media type". WTF?$*!

Does the software transcode the video when it sync's with the PC, and thats how they can say mp4 playback is supported? Unless I'm missing something, technology is supposed to make things easier...not give us the option for more complication. Any input would be appealing!

Well, do you have your software set to play .mp4 files? You do this by going into the settings>file types, check the box next to .mp4 and hit OK.

It sounds like the phone is using an unsupported codec, such as divx or xvid. The Zune software will play .MP4's but not ones with the above codecs.
