Default E3: Microsoft and the Xbox 360

Here's a list of what's coming up on the next Xbox 360 update:
· Play from hard drive. Copy your games from the game disc and play directly from the hard drive. Not only will the drive not spin, but load times are quicker, as well. Of course, you will still need the disc in the tray to prove you own the game.
· Access Xbox LIVE Marketplace on the Web. Browse and purchase Marketplace content whenever you want from Xbox.com and it downloads automatically to your console. Purchase that new map, television episode, the latest Xbox LIVE Arcade game or set up a movie to watch when you get home from work.
· Dashboard built into the new Xbox Guide. For everyone who loves the blades interface, it’s not going away; they are now built directly in to the new Xbox guide. Every feature and option is available right from the guide. You can even access your full games library at all times. No matter where you are (in dash or in game), immediately call up your games played list and directly launch a game.
· LIVE Party system. Create a party of up to eight friends, and stay with them from one game to another, or watch a Netflix movie together, or share a slideshow of your personal photos. It works with all Xbox 360 titles, not just upcoming games. LIVE Party allows up to eight people to chat in the dashboard, so you can meet up before playing.
· Xbox LIVE Primetime. This whole new category of games is going to give you more reasons to get online with your friends. Games will support everything you’d expect, like Achievements and leader boards, but many of these games will include real prizes. You can invite your friends, and even set a reminder for an upcoming show. Each game is broadcast simultaneously, so everyone is answering the same questions. Many events will have a live host, calling the shots as they happen.
· Avatars. Your online identity started as a Gamertag - it then grew into a personalized Gamercard. Now, it has evolved even further into avatars. You can express your style, check out new outfits and share this with the community. Avatars will also be integrated into Xbox LIVE Arcade games, LIVE Party, as well as retail games. Avatars will be available for everyone, even Xbox Live Silver members. If you don't like them, you can still use gamerpics instead.
· New display support. Because you asked for it, we are adding 16X10 over VGA or HDMI, and support for 1440x900 or 1680x1050.
· 8 person party chat
· Netflix

The New Guide
That's the new look of the Xbox 360's Guide, accessible from the big old Guide button on the standard controller. You'll have familiar access to your games, media and settings, via the pop up Guide, which loads faster and more smoothly than the current iteration. You'll also be able to hop directly into anything from your Games library — Live Arcade games, movies, installed Xbox 360 retail games — regardless of what you're currently using your 360 for.

The new Guide and the NXE interface are both said to load faster, even if you have 100+ games in your library. Whitten noted that the LIVE team is very focused on optimizing the experience.

Limited edition controllers
Microsoft will soon (well, in September) be releasing two limited edition Xbox 360 controllers.

XBL Arcade games announced at E3
Portal: Still Alive
Galaga Legions
Geometery Wars 2 [link]
Uno Rush
Banjo Kazooie (1st game?)
South Park

So you can copy games to your hard drive...
and they will boot up faster etc,
But you still need the disk in the drive?
That's not worth the time to code it!!!

Why haven't they thought of something more creative?

But, +Rep for the info.

Well, you gotta have it in the disk drive to verify you didn't run to Blockbuster and copy the game to your hard drive...

I'm going to assume that the disk won't have to spin and make noise the whole time your playing the game.

Wrong.
My system freezes up all the time. This would be awesome.

Yay MS for the whole slew of features.

If you rent a movie from netflix, you can invite your friends into a party room and watch it together over LIVE.
How awesome is that?

HOLY F***!
Seriously!?
That is so KICK A$$!
I'm saving up for a 360 on club live...
Any day they'll put them back on...
Any day now.

Actually, Knowing my luck I'll have 34,600 and it will cost 35,000 therefore selling all of them before I could get the tickets...

So here's my idea:
Microsoft could make it so when you burn the game to HDD you can choose to send out the serial of the game so no one else could burn it to their HDD or you can choose to put the cd in every time. That way if you have internet on you Xbox you could make the game only yours and you could play without the disk.

That's actually a pretty good list of features. And Xbox is getting netflix now huh? Wasn't there something about zune and netflix before too. I wonder if that has to do with anything(my guess is probably not though)

Yep, this is a great list of updates. I can't wait for it all to come out. There are tons of great games coming out soon as well. I'm looking forward to playing Fable 2.

Neat.
Now if you have a 20gb HDD would you get owned when you have like 67 games?

Much less than 67, considering a DVD is over a gig per layer...

Yeah, I'm glad I let my brother have the Xbox 360 pro when I got my elite. Yay for actually having a reason to justify the 120GB HDD!

Actually more like 4.7 GB. And those are just single layered. Xbox 360 uses DVD 9's which, of course, hold about 9 GB, although some games are much smaller than that.

Well, you'd have to manage your space well. You don't have to download the games to the hard drive though.

The red one does look pretty sweet. It'd go great with my 360 Elite..
