I'd recommend the 360 to you just for the better game catalog and xbox live is a very nice online setup. I don't know if the software titles are a big thing to you or not though.

I highly recommend an Xbox 360. I know this is more of a matter of opinion but, it seems like the 360 has the better game lineup of exclusives. Isn't that the whole reason of getting a console is for the games? I mean why pay more if both consoles get for the majoity of the time when you can get them for less on the Xbox 360? and more come out on the 360 (That I would play anyway) As for the online yeah you have to pay $7 a month but that comes out to like 25 cents a day so its not like you are paying that much.

Base your decision off of the games you like before anything else. Usually you'll find more games you like on just one. Halo, Gears of War, Mass Effect, and other games are exclusive to the 360 and are thought of as some of the best for 360. Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy, and Ratchet and Clank are some of the best for the PS3. It's all personal preference.

I would recommend going through the game catalogs of both systems and seeing which has games you want to play more.

Xbox Live is pretty much hands down the best online experience you can get on a console, but it also has a subscription fee.
PS3 has free online, but lacks things like standard voice chat in all games.

Xbox is has a nice, functional dashboard, but lacks many features the PS3 has.
PS3 has nice things like removable hard drive, inernet browser, and built in wireless.

My personal preference is the 360, but I must admit that the PS3 has a few games that are tempting me to buy it. MGS4 and FFXIII come to mind.

the xbox version gets 2 episodes of exclusive downloadable content, so come fall we'll be playing an extra 10+ hours of GTA. hopefully 10+ for each episode too. after the first 2 episodes, any remaining DLC will be cross platform, but ps3 will never see eps1&2.

Yeah, Xbox Live Marketplace is definitely a draw to the 360.

I've got a friend who has bad both a PS3 and a 360 since their release dates, and the only thing he has ever used his PS3 for is to watch Blu-ray movies (except for a week when he played through Resistance). For games he plays almost exclusivly 360, with occasional breaks for Brawl on Wii.

(I have a 360, btw)

Oh, and don't worry about red ring of death, the new 360's are using new smaller, cooler, quieter components than the originals, makings it almost impossible for your 360 to overheat and die. Even if it somehow does, you get a new one for free, you just have to wait a few weeks.

It's really easy to link your Zune to 360. If you have your computer and 360 connected to the same router, you'll have the option of "Zune" in music. Or, you can plug the zune straight into the 360 via USB (this will also charge it).

the 90nm gpu was the problem causer in the red ring of death fiasco. the falcon 360's, the new ones, have an updated 65nm cpu on the mainboard. ms left the problematic 90nm gpu in there, but added much needed heatsinks to it that should have been there in the first place. there have been a few reports of red rings on the new mainboard but not nearly as many as the previous model.
oh and the dvd drive is still loud as hell. when i stream movies from my computer to my 360, i dont even notice my 360 running and it's over 2 years old, with the old parts. my friend's elite is just as loud as mine when its spinning a disc though, and my xbox is pretty loud.

about waiting a few weeks....
in my opinion, they should be dealing with the replacements in a better manner. they've admitted that it was a manufacturing error that caused the huge amount of failures, how could they deny it, but it still takes up to or longer than 4 weeks. my xbox took 23 or 24 days, a friend of mine's took almost 5 weeks. i could understand this if they were actually doing repairs to the console and sending YOURS back, but they're just putting yours on one shelf and taking one off another shelf and sending it to you. you dont get the same xbox back, the serial number is always different. they should overnight a coffin, have a day or 2 to process it and box up another xbox to voernight back to you. 5 business days tops.
not to mention its a pain in the ass to use your downloaded content unless your 360 is plugged in aaallllllllll the time because the consoles serial number that the dlc is linked to isnt the same. you always have to be on live if you're using downloaded content on your "refurbished" xbox 360. no arcade games unless you're live which is annoying when you take your xbox to your friends and dont go online with it.

i love my 360, but it's going to be crowded on the shelf come holiday season when i buy myself a ps3... i'm just waiting for some good games MGS4 alone doesnt justify the price, plus all my friends are on xbl.

if i didnt have a 360 and i could only have 1 right now, i'd take the 360. if i could pick one for christmas THIS YEAR, i'd still say 360.
if you asked me again next christmas i'd probably say ps3, but thats pure speculation.
or just buy both, 360 now... ps3 later. thats your best bet.

only reason why most people saying buy xbox360 is the game library.. but if you have nice full hd tv... then i'll say go with PS3 because of the pricing for a game system including a built in blu-ray.

ya know xbox does output in hd ... n i'm sure they will have a optional blu-ray attachment ....plus if i wanted blu ray i'd rather get a stand alone player.... but thats me.
i think a big thing is exclusive games ....if you have to have the new metal gear and umm... ummm... motorstorm . and ah resistance then ps3 anything alse the 360 has. and your friends is a big part(if you have them & if you play online)... like 90% of my friends from work have 360s n the ones that have ps3s have both.... so yeah its fun to play with people you know. also i believe you get what you pay for ...i have not heard any thing about ps3 online ...but if its like ps2 no thank you....

I'd probably get a PS3 because, well I've played them both around the same amount of time but I don't think I'd really want to pay for an Xbox Live subscription even though it's not that much. Money is still money. But the PS3 would have to be one of the backwards compatible ones.
