PS3 linux and Beyond

I had tried PSUbuntu on my ps3, but switched to Yellow Dog cause it has Sony support (and mostly cause wifi doesn't work without tinkering the kernel in PSUbuntu). What distro of linux do you think i should use on my ps3. Also, what are some cool things I could do with it? I want to be able to rip... i mean... backup my legally own blu-ray movies. Also, I want to try installing some free linux games like tux racer and tremulous. Any thoughts?

Back up Blu-Ray movies to what another Blu-Ray disc... although x264 encoding is an option but even than the film will take up 8~10gb of space.

Yellow Dog is probably your best bet if you don't want to fiddle with stuff and fine tune it but Ubuntu does have extensive forums with loads of helpful Nix users. Ideally, you should be able to watch any DVD film without needing some bypass for the DVD Region Code if its a proper Nix distro. Other than that, you might a keyboard for it, which I am guessing you have already. Use it as word processor and better internet access. As for Nix games, tux racer is a good time waster and Tremulous is pretty good. There is also the Knights of Worrath or something like that which I find is a good game.

Only limits to what you can do is what Linux can do...hehehe just thinking you could probably install PC UT3 because the DVD comes with a Windows/Linux install and you could play UT3 with mods and maps that will never get to the PS3 version.

the ps3 blocks RSX access tho, so no 3d stuff

That's kind of gay. I'd rather install Linux on a PC and get 3d stuff rather than have it blocked and locked down on a console.

i wouldn't even do it, i have Ubuntu 7.10 running on one of my computers but i would just leave the default OS on the ps3

Same. I'd only use the PS3 to play Resistance 2 when it comes out if I got one.

you still have the default, but you can get linux too.

i know it the ps3 works with Linux. it just doesn't really offer you much over than the fact that its Linux on a ps3

I thought it would offer so much more but if they lock down the 3D GPU...makes it just good for word processing and internet.

it can still do 2D emulators and whatnot, and there is PLENTY of good 2D games

yeah I have a couple thousand ROMs so emulators on a PS3 seems logical to me, I will have to mess with my friends Linux running PS3
