This is my first Tutorial here at Zuneboards. I'm posting in this thread a how-to on ripping / converting about any DVD Movie to Zune compatible WMV format, using just VLC (freeware) and Free Zune Video Converter (freeware). They are both free programs, and both very useful and worthwhile.
VLC link Free Zune Video Converter Link First: Open VLC Media Player ![]() Then Click File and go to Open Disc... ![]() ![]() Select "DVD" under "Disc Type". Select the Stream/Save checkbox, then click Settings... ![]() Under "outputs" select the "File" checkbox, and click the Browse button and select a location on your computer and select a name for the movie you are ripping, be sure to give the filename a ".mpg" extension. Under "Encapsulation Method" select "MPEG 1". Under "Transcoding Options" select the following Checkboxes: "Video Codec" and "Audio Codec". Next to Video codec, Select MP1V and change the bitrate to 2048. Next to Audio Codec, Select MPGA and change the bitrate to 192. Click "OK", and Click "OK" again. you will probably have to wait 10 minutes (pretty high end fast computer) to 2 hours (extremely low end computer) while it rips the dvd for you. It will just look like it did when you first opened it when its done ripping the dvd for you. Now open Free Zune Video Converter. ![]() First Drag your movie file into the large white section showing the files to convert. then under Profile, Select WMV2 High Q. Change Bitrate under Video Options to "1150". Be sure Audio Bitrate is 160. Then Click Convert. The completed files will not need to be converted to play on the zune, I use the hard drive hack to send my movies over to my zune which plays it as is. ![]() |

So I have found that with SOME dvd movies, You'll need to know which Title(s) your movie (or content) is in on your DVD, The movie / main video content is likely the title with the most chapters in it. Once you know which Title you want to rip, you can set which Title you wish to Rip from the Open Disc window under "Title" which will be a drop-down box. Thanks for all the positive comments guys!

guys.. and or girls...
have anyone used that very converter in the post and was able to sync videos into their zune? I have not had any luck getting my own videos into to zune and I use free zune video converter, so before i spend another 2 hours converting can someone just confirm that they followed every step and successfully put the video into their zune. please try. I have tried converting many movies doing a combination of different format bitrate etc. for now i will try using different converters. info:: zune 80 currently converting to WMV under 700kb/s 30fps audio 192kb/s sampling auto HZ resolution 320X240 I convert mostly AVI files ~700mb I dont know if the copy i got but my Free Zune video converter was not installed it's just the .exe file that came with the zip file if anyone spots anything wrong with what im doing please include it in their post |

Secondly: DO NOT select ANY profile other than WMV2 / WMA2 High Q. 800K bits video and 160KBPS audio. After selecting that profile, click "load". If you want higher quality video, set the 800 to as high as 1100. I only have a zune 30GB, so you'll have to fiddle higher or lower a bit. but High quality settings should be fine. Let me know if you have any problems after doing what I say. ![]() |

at least you got it to work. I think the problem may have something to do with a lack of proper codecs or something, but I don't know enough about your system to pinpoint your problems. I'm just happy you got it to work at all.

I am also trying to convert a movie file to .wmv or ,mp4, but the free zune video converter says it can not find the fine when I find it. I tried dragging it to the software, but to no avail. Any suggestions?
Thanks for your hard work btw! ![]() |

I honestly don't know why it would be doing this, is there something wrong with the filename extension or the format of the file? are you missing any codecs in your system for audio and/or video?
