Thumbs up How to Unlock the Zune using Zalternator ... A MUST READ!!!!!

To properly unlock your Zune device using Zalternator do this....

1. download Zalternator and install.

2. Using a video in wmv format bigger than 30 megs open Zune software

3. connect your Zune device and sync the movie(Don't worry the movie won't actually be synced)

4. Make sure your Zune device reads " Sync..." and not "Connected"

5. While it is "syncing" load your Task Manager by pressing ctrl-alt- delete all at the same time.

6. In the Task Manager locate Zune.exe only and terminate the process.(before you go on make sure your device still reads " Sync...")

7. Open Zalternator.exe and select your device firmware. Click NEXT and it should take you to your choices.

8. Select your desired choice....
To sync with Media Monkey, Windows Media Player, or Winamp Select "GENERIC WPD". then click apply(the rest of the choices are self explanitory)

9. Click apply and exit Zalternator and open Windows Media Player for instance.(During this whole time your Zune device should read "Sync..." because we just tricked the Zune into thinking we were still using Zune software to sync.)

10. The media player should recognize your Zune(is still does even without this hack, but it without it you can't sync) and it might ask you to give your device a name, ignore this and just continue.

11. Organize your music the way you want it then simply click and drag onto Sync window and press "Sync" or use my tutorial under to organize all the music.

11. When you are done simply disconnect your Zune and reboot to reset the hack you just did. The hack will only work once per session so every time you restart the hack is reset. Enjoy!!!!

I took the time to make this whole thing because i found myself desperate well before this to organize everything. I know how you feel. I was so close to switching over to Ipod but hang in there!!!!!!!

Question

i tried to follow you, but i have no idea what #2 means. how do i open zune with a video?
anyway, when i turn the zune software on, it automatically begins syncing. i did everything else you wrote. when i select "generic wpd" & click apply, the display goes right back to zune!? i have vista. wmp does NOT see a device; it asks me to connect a device.
so what's next?

That's true, although some people were having some problems following the instructions, as they ARE clear to people with a relatively good computer experience, but casual users were lost.

#2 simply means that you have to open launch Zune software then try and sync a moderately big sized movie lol . as for automatic syncing u can change that by simply finding it in your Zune software settings i don't have much time to explain right now but by the way you are explaining your problem i think your thinking WAY too hard, make it simple.don't over analyze it.

When you kill the process in the middle of the sync of a large file, are there any fragments of the transfer left on the Zune? Is there any way to tell?

There should not be any fragments of the file on the device. I guess that the only way you could check would be to use the hard drive hack and look into the folders on the Zune.
