I use DIGITAL MUSIC RECORDER, works great, after you capture the stream you can save the audio as mp3.

make sure you remember to delete the wav temp file, they can be real big.

Get Wm Recorder, you can capture windows media as well as real stream. You should try real player 11, you can capture flv videos with it, you will have to get a program that can convert the flv to other video formats. I use Imtoo 3GP video converter, works great for lectures I capture and convert for my zune.

Thing is, Audacity is using the hardware interface. Not all sound cards can do this. Most can, but not all. I have the program, put it on another PC, and the capability was lost. Quickly checked the hardware, and the hardware does not support the loop-back to record the audio coming out of the soundcard. Now a days, it's the older cards that don't have support.

Okay vista fans in order to get this to work, your going to have to do a few things first.

Firstly go to you start menu, click control panel, on the left and side will be an option that says classic view; click it, on the left find the option that says sound, click the tab that says recording, now if your sound card doesn't show up don't fret, right click in the white space, click the option that says "show disabled devices," right click on your sound card, click enable, now click properties, click the levels tab, and turn the volume up (not to high as sound quality will decrease)

Now open audacity, click the edit tab, go to preferences, the first section you see will be Audio/IO, on the far top left will be recording, in the drop down box select your sound card, in version 1.3 beneath the devices drop box will be the recording drop box, it should already be set at stereo, for version 1.2 cancel out of preferences, and go to the drop box that the first tutorial instructed you to click and choose stereo. With any luck you just got it to work. good luck my vista peeps

You will lose a lot of quality if you try to record it with Audacity (bitrate, and possibly channel configuration [stereo to mono]).

I highly recommend the latest version of Realplayer (used to suck but now its downloading feature is really good), and Orbit. They both can download tons of streaming audio including Myspace songs and streaming mp3s from embedded flash players with no loss in quality (from the original source).

You could also use file2hd.com. I use it for myspace but I think it works for more than just that. Anyways very good tutorial! Thank you!
