There are hundreds of linux distros available and for the most part they are all free. Unfortunately though I cannot name a single best distro. That is for you to decide based on your needs and wants. I can however recommend a few that are great for beginners, allowing you to become familiar with linux. I have used every one of these distributions and many more so I can personally say that I like them all. Do not always go with what is most popular, but sometimes depending on your hardware the popular way just might be the best way.

Ubuntu

Linux Mint

Parsix

Foresight

DreamLinux

Shift Linux

Ulteo

Before you download any of these I want to make sure that your reasons for Linux are well intended and just to point out some myths. Both Gow and I can confirm this that no matter who tells you otherwise Linux is not going to protect you anymore from the NSA (Big Brother) than Vista if the government wants to look at your computer they will regardless of its OS. Secondly just becasue you have installed linux that does not make you some super 1337 hacker, you must first hit the books and learn how to become one, and this takes years to do.

If you have any questions as to how to dual boot just ask me, and do not wipe your old OS as you will more than likely regret that you did.

Remember this before you go whole hog Linux.

Linux != Windows and never will be...ever period. It is a different Operating System with different goals. Linux is NOT Windows

Ubuntu is not recommended instead go with Ubuntu-based Linux Mint or Ultumix.

Than there is Fedora 9, Mandriva and many more.

Distrowatch is a site with a listing of all Linux distros + reviews.

DistroWatch.com: Put the fun back into computing. Use Linux, BSD.

What's wrong with Ubuntu? It is a very nice OS, and is very reliable.

Linux Mint is my personal favorite out of the group, it includes a lot of features that Ubuntu does not such as codecs and Compiz Fusion. Gow is a smart man listen to him. I was going to say the same thing, but instead I did not.

Darren its not that anything is wrong with Ubuntu its just that the Ubuntu based distros generally offer a little more, Linux Mint is geared more for the beginner than Ubuntu regular.
