Default Which linux distro ?

ive decided to try and install linux on my comp...only problem is that im finding theres tons of different "distros", as i have discovered they are called

my question is which one should i get. i want a stable one with not many problems

i also realize that choosing the right one depends on what ur into ...im really into graphics stuff, 3d modeling, photo manipulation, illustration. i also want one with good multimedia capabilities for music and viewing pics and videos...thats not gonna give me problems with my sound drivers and what not

I like Ubuntu.
It's simple. Works fast. Looks GREAT! and comes with a decent setup of apps.
And of course (the best part), you can boot up into it without installing to see if you like it/ use it to fix your computer.

Agreed.
Try an unbuntu live CD.

Ubuntu is not reccommended.

If you must go Ubuntu go Linux Mint or Ultumix. Why? Easier, better support. Linux Mint is more ubuntu based and takes it into a new Linux user friendly environment. Ultumix is a repackaged customized Ubuntu distro that includes both KDE and Gnome to allow new users to decide which they like better plus more hardware and software that new users will need.

More options:

PCLinuxOS...there is a reason it is liked by Linewbies and Advanced users it is a great distro. However, they have not done a new distro for this year's hardware so your hardware may not be support.

Fedora 9...may take a little more to learn but once you do this is a rock solid distro that puts Ubuntu to shame. It has extensive forums with solutions plus can be good for Linewbies and Advanced users.

Mandriva...very Linewbie friendly, even more so than Ubuntu and Linux Mint hope to be. Mandriva has been at this business of Linux distro for beginners around 10+ years now. The one to download will be Mandriva Linux One Spring.

A list of distros plus reviews can be found here: DistroWatch.com: Put the fun back into computing. Use Linux, BSD.

EDIT: Forgot the obligatory...

Linux != Windows and never will be...ever period. It is a different Operating System with different goals. Linux is NOT Windows

Much agreed, don't get me wrong Ubuntu is great but there are other things out there that are better, such as Linux Mint. I don't know why everybody says go Ubuntu I think its because they are inexperienced with Linux as well or just haven't personally tried anything else on the beginners level.

Why do people think I post the Linux != Windows link. Explains the difference and what Linux is and is not.

I particularly find annoying the "well Linux doesn't do this like Windows" stuff.

Remember it is a new Operating System and just like Windows or Mac OSX you can't expect to pick it up and know all the tricks. It is like learning anything new, you have to read up on what this or that does. It is why I dislike the notion of telling people just to switch OSs as a solution.

Personally, I use Backtrack as a local install when I boot to my Linux partition (Dual booting XP Professional, Vista Ultimate, and Backtrack). The best Linux distro to learn on is Fedora Core. I started with FC2 and made it to 7 or 8 before I made the change to Backtrack.

(This is coming from a Linux Professional by the way)

No offense but weren't you bashing me on Linux a few days ago? What's with the change of heart?

Also, I recommend Ubuntu, but other distros aren't bad at all. There is Mandriva and PCLinuxOS (mandriva with a few changes), but Ubuntu seems to have the most support, but if GoW says otherwise, I suggest to take his advice over mine.

No I wasn't bashing on you I was correcting you. Sometimes people mistake me for being angry.

Ubuntu Studio is Ubuntu plus the extra programs there is a code you can use to install the theme on regular ubuntu in like 6 seconds if thats the only reason for it. In addition you can easily change the themes on linux to anything you want depending on the graphics base for your linux OS. So using a linux distro for the way it looks is not the best idea, you should go for features and then change its appearance.

Hm.. Well some things REALLY sounded like bashing, but whatever, I hope we can both put it all behind us.

By the way, does anyone know if Linux Mint is any good? Should I switch from Ubuntu to Mint? I don't do anything besides talk on Pidgin and use the internet, and sometimes write things in OpenOffice. I have 2.5 GB of memory, and at the moment a **** graphics card, but almost 1 TB of HDD space.

You should have read the entire thread both Gow and I said that we HIGHLY recommend Linux Mint even more than the worshiped Ubuntu.
