Talking So it's time for a new laptop...

My budget is around $1700. Trying to find a nice gaming laptop that is around the configuration of the Inspiron 1720 below (total price as shown was $1,524). I'm more of a desktop man, but due to some recent changes (and a new job ), I need to buy a new laptop!

Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T9300 (2.5GHz/800Mhz FSB/6MB cache)
Anti-glare, widescreen 17.0 inch display (1440 x 900)
256MB NVIDIA® GeForce® 8600M GT
4GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 at 667MHz
Size: 320GB SATA Hard Drive (5400RPM)
ExpressCard Sound Blaster X-Fi® Xtreme Audio Sound Card

I've considered the Gateway FX series, but it's a Gateway... All ideas are welcome!

That right there looks nice.
It's better than my stock 1GB RAM.

Well, with everything you mentioned there, plus a couple extra things, you can get a laptop from HP for $1,538.99. That's with some extra upgrades. Here's how I configured it.

Vista Premium
Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 Duo Processor T9300
17.0" diagonal WSXGA+ High-Definition HP BrightView Widescreen Display (1680 x 1050)
BrightView improves color contrast in your images and video
50% OFF Upgrade to 4GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)
A 64-bit Operating System is required to take full advantage of 4GB memory. A 32-bit Operating System only recognizes up to 3GB memory.
512MB NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GS
HDMI support is available with discrete graphics
HP Imprint (Radiance) + Microphone + Fingerprint Reader + Webcam
Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 4965AGN Network Connection and Bluetooth(TM)
320GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive
LightScribe SuperMulti 8X DVD+/-RW with Double Layer Support
High Capacity 8 Cell Lithium Ion Battery

And that about does it. For about $14 more, you can get a decent upgrade from the Dell. Oh, and the laptop that I used to configure this was the dv9700t.

I suggest the Lenovo T61p. I recently got mine for college, and I couldn't be more happier with it.

For $1750 or so, I specced mine with:
Intel T9300 2.5Ghz
15.4" WUXGA TFT 1920x1200 screen
Nvidia Quadro FX 570M 256mb (its the workstation version of the 8600GT)
2gig PC6400 RAM
160gig 7200rpm Hard Drive
6 cell lithium ion battery
the really nice intel wireless card
Bluetooth enabled

I love this thing. It has that feeling of high quality and gives great performance. For reference, it can play Crysis on medium settings and WoW on the highest settings. I have yet to install other games on it, since it is primarily going to be my college laptop, and I have my gaming desktop. It makes a perfect work laptop and a pretty good gaming computer.

Dell Inspiron is not recommended from experience of friends. HP is not recommended unless you get the Business end and even that is iffy as most of them break right around the end of warranty mark according to a Raytheon department. Panasonic Toughbook is a joke, Dell Latitude ATG

Look at Sager NP2092 (15.4"), Lenovo Thinkpad T6x series, Dell Latitude/XPS/Precision and IBuyPower.

Thinkpad T6x series: http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/c...011B825513BCED
Dell: http://www.dell.com/content/products...=04&l=en&s=bsd
IBuyPower: http://www.ibuypower.com/mall/notebook.asp

Dell and Lenovo have student discounts. Dell's is through delluniversity.com.

Lenovo's: http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/c...tals/Education

For those who don't know who Raytheon is: http://raytheon.com/

P.S. FYI it is cheaper and better to get the RAM from Newegg or Crucial and order the notebook with the cheapest solution. More bang for the buck that way since it is really easy to install RAM. Hard drive is also a good idea but not necessary.
