I was thinking of getting my dad to trash his XP for Vista 64-Bit since I've HEARD (Although as of now have no answers to a question) that drivers are getting better for it, and was wondering a few things.
My dad ****s up computers everytime he gets his hands on one. He has some unknown talent for doing it. He also installs a lot of crap onto the system as well, so I came here to ask a few questions. 1. If he and I have our own user accounts, will our start menus and such be personalized or shared? Like, if he installs AVG Anti-Spyware will it appear in my start menu list, or just his? 2. Will the programs and features my dad selects to startup such as Windows Defender, this, that, etc. etc. be on my startup as well? Or will our own user accounts be separate from one another? Thanks if anyone can answer those, I just NEED to know how seperate our accounts will be because I don't want him ****ing up the computer. Also, this isn't some change of heart and love for Vista, I just have a VERY small partition for it and the ONLY other operating system on this computer is Windows XP 64-Bit Edition, so to get more space I want him to ditch it. Thanks, Nate |

1. It depends upon the program. In Windows XP, items will only appear in both start menus if they are in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\
If the program decides to put a shortcut there, then it will be available to all. It is the same in Windows Vista, except in Windows Vista, the folder structure is a little different. 2. I think that it is the same as number 1, but it would be in different places. Startup programs can be in the registry or in the start menu, so it is kind of confusing. If you don't understand any of that, just know that it depends upon the program. |

Answers: It depends! If you are the administrator on your computer, the software will be installed on both accounts when you set up the software, but if you are not the administrator when you set up the programs, it will not show up on your account, but you can make it show up by searching the program by going to "search" on your computer. So unless your the administrator installing these programs, they will not show up in your account! |

1. Separate if he chooses when he installs.
2. ^ Windows Defender can be disabled from the Control panel some how.

OK, I'll make it so that no one has the administrator account (I mean the TRUE admin account) and we'll use admin-privelege accounts if we do it.
But what about startup? Will his bull**** start up in my account if he has his own account and doesn't do anything in the administrator account? |

Hmmm....I know that Revo Uninstaller has a really good start-up disabler(there's a Windows one, somewhere, but no idea for where it is in Vista). Unfortunately, it would remove it in both accounts-or at least it should-which would not make your father happy. Also, if you both have admin level powers, it won't matter if you install from separate accounts. And unless Microsoft includes in their various Vista changes a default "Install only for this user" option, then it will be up to the content provider to do so, which won't always happen. In short, the best course of action would be to stick to XP and Ubuntu for most of your stuff, let your dad **** up his own Vista machine. It's harder to now, but still entirely possible.

It doesn't matter now. My dad has a Vista account, and I'm just hoping he'll use it more and ditch XP 64. It's so slow now that it's like running Vista with 1GB of memory, and having one processor. It's pitiful for a 64-bit machine. Hell, 32 bit XP with 256 MB of memory literally runs faster.
