I use Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Desktop Edition, and it is a very good operating system.
Yes, you can download it and install it to your computer, and yes it works with wireless connections.

No one says about the best Operating System, just the one they prefer or find easier to use.

Here are some screenshots from me.

Really, it's just super safe, and best of all, FREE.

I triple boot my computer now with XP, Vista, and Ubuntu. When I want to Photoshop or use PageFour to write, I go to XP or Vista (depending on the mood I'm in).

When I want to use torrents to legally download things like song demos or video game trailers (yeah I use em every now and then), I go to Ubuntu where the torrent client seems a lot better, and doesn't use all the network bandwith, rendering all the other computers in the house unable to use the Internet while I'm downloading.

You can do almost anything you want in Ubuntu, modify the taskbars, whatever you want. It's really safe, so you don't need an antivirus. The downsides are really just getting Windows applications to work, since Wine doesn't work with most of them..

But there are a lot of legal freebies in here... Either way, I recommend avoiding it if you're not good at computers... Getting it to install, then if you remove it getting rid of the GRUB loader can be a total bitch.

nathanlawliet, wow that's hardcore!

Other than cost (WOO!) the security is a big reason. This is because it's open source, but also because less people are using it so there are less hackers trying to exploit Linux on a daily basis.

I myself use Knoppix on a CD to recover files whenever someone's windows comp goes kaput!

Im typing this on Xubuntu 8.04. I had a few hiccups w/ wireless, and I had to unplug the connection from the router into my laptop to dl the fixes(then it turned out it was one of my router settings anyway) It runs perfect for most things, but I recommend having a system w/ XP or vista on it as well(or multiboot)

my reason for switching is that the computer had got so slow and crappy that the internet wouldn't work. that was the final straw because my only worry w/ linux was not being able to set up wireless, so I had nothing to loose(especially since I have a perfect working xp laptop next to this one)

go to the ubuntu website (ubuntu.com) and try the wubi installer. its real easy, and doesn't require you to set up another partition on your hard drive. it installs straight from windows.

i have tried linux in the past and no longer use it because of program installation annoyances, though i hear that has been fixed in the ubuntu, yet i prefer smaller more minimalist low ram linux OSs i used to use, damn small linux, knoppix, fedora core7, ubuntu, pclinuxos, arklinux, opensuse, and pc fluxboxos(which i liked best)

Actually, we are all wrong. Ubuntu Linux is not an operating system. It's a video game.

I don't think you CAN pay for Ubuntu.... That guy says he did... Someone probably knew him and that he was an idiot, downloaded the Live setup file, burned it to a DVD, and said he had to pay for it...

you can buy it on amazonamazon for $0.99 which is a waste of a dollar, slow(have to wait on shipping), and it is old(7.10, not 8.04)

The upgrades are free. And really, a dollar for a CD isn't bad at all, especially because of how worthless the dollar is now... That guy just was an idiot for thinking it's a game.

I'm not a huge fan of Linux but I do really like Ubuntu.
And I own like 20 CD's with different versions of SLAX on them.
Slax is amazing. SUPER FAST. but it's only for CD boot up. It's not as good when you install it.
Try it. It's 100% temporary. Doesn't leave anything on your computer.

EasyBCD and the Live Ubuntu disc shall be your friend down that road. Use EasyBCD to rewrite the MBR erasing GRUB and than use the Ubuntu disc to add the Linux partitions back to the windows partition.

Easy as cake.

As for Linux, it is just another Operating System and it has its pros and cons like ALL Operating Systems. Ubuntu is alright but don't use it if you have a Windows network as it seems to have problems with Samba. Fedora Core 9 is great now that it has Video drivers but it is not as EASY as Ubuntu. PCLinuxOS crew is working on a new release but currently don't have a working Intel WiFi 4965ABGN Driver. Linux Mint is alright but only if you plan on using 32 bit as they keep promising a 64 bit release but haven't gotten one out yet.

Ark is alright but way too advanced for beginners, Gentoo is not for you.

BlueWhite 64 was a good slightly less advanced version of Slackware 12 (not for you either).

OpenSuse has some issues and annoyances for me but it could be good for other people.

I have yet to stumble on a Linux distro that I can honestly state it is the best for my Notebook.

Other Linewbie friendly distros are Mandriva, Freespire and others.

Just check Distrowatch.com for a whole list of Distros.

Gow is the man for Linux, if any more questions you have Aqua, ask him.

I could help you out too...

Bleh, I just format everything and start anew lol. Of course, right now my PC seems to be running fast, smooth, and nice with my tripleboot, so hopefully this is the last OS install/reinstall for a long time.

But for newbs, Linux can be... difficult and different. You've got to learn how to get what you want (Synaptic Package Manager) and use it. Because if you give up and reinstall it.... It can be a pain.

Unless you do what Gow says to do.
