Thumbs up The Upcoming USB 3.0

Imagine how much faster Zune transfers can possibly be... as if they aren't fast enough as it is. :P

Imagine how much just plain file transferring with any USB 3.0 device can be?

How about an external video card? Possible with USB 3.0.

External Raptor Hard drive? Possible with USB 3.0

Zune 160 (ETA Unknown, heh) that syncs in mere minutes? Possible with USB 3.0

That would be f*cking amazing.

I'm just wondering what the next Port-Transfer is going to be, since it sounds like Intel decided, "Hey let's throw "unknown project title" away and work on USB 3. We'll release "Unknown Project Title" when Microsoft Codename: Vienna is released."... Hmm..

Is there a new version of USB under the mask somewhere? Hmmm... Obviously the next USB version, after 3 isn't going to be "corded."

Yeah but you've got to keep in mind that it doesn't matter how fast you can transfer data because the data is only going to move at the speed that your device (zune, flash drive, harddrive, etc...) can read it and write it. I'm not 100% sure on the average speed of a SATA drive now is only like 3mbps (if I'm not mistaken) and I understand that the Raptor drives are pretty damn quick but what do they tap out at like a gig? I'm not saying that this isn't a great advance in technology as HDD speeds will only increase but. So don't expect a huge difference in transfer rates in the near future...

I considered the horns, and, behold, there came up among them another little horn, before whom there were three of the first horns plucked up by the roots: and, behold, in this horn were eyes like the eyes of man, and a mouth speaking great things.[/

um... USB 2.0 is already too fast for the zune. USB 3.0 will not have any performance improvement on current generation products.

Rapter is not the fastest HDD. Some 7200RPM drives such as Samsung F1 or Hitachi 1k7200 are faster than Rapter. These drives can achieve a bout 150-200MB/s burst speed.
This is equal to approximately 1.2Gbit-1.6Gbit/s. SATA 300 has a maximum theoretical speed of 2.4Gbit/s.

BTW... USB 3 specification has been created over year ago.

So the new devices are going to odd-worldly expensive along with the new USB 3.0 Hardware when it's first release.

Alienware and Dell will be the first Manufacturers to integrate them with ther PC's/Notebooks.

You can guarantee that. :P

From what i've heard, USB will have different connector than usb2 because it has 3 lanes.. I think. It has been a while and my memory might be off.

Of course anything new will be expensive.

No, you're correct. I've been researching the new 3.0 for almost 2 weeks now.

It's nowhere near relative to the old USB. USB 1.1 AND 2..they were basically the same, just different connectors and different internal programming, thus the difference in speed. 3 is an entirely different type of connector, different shape from the other 2, and much smaller in size.

OO, USB 3.0 sounds pretty tight. Those transfer speeds are insane...

I just wonder what the other hardware requirements are going to be for it... RAM & Processor speed, etc...

Those requirements might be outrageous in price as well.

In theory is sounds bloody orgasmic ._.

But, if your device isn't fast enough, it will just get backed up and the data will merge into the same lane.

(...did I just type "bloody orgasmic"?)

Sounds like a long-term investment. The whole computing world will be different once all the new hardware is in place and USB 3.0 is as popular as USB 2.0 is right now.

I thought USB3.0 is supposed to be backwards compatible with 2.0. Just like 2.0 was with 1.1. I look at it this way, sure our devices aren't fast enough for it now, but you need the headroom to expand. This pulls the limitation of the interface, and puts the weight to improve on hard drive and device manufacturers.

Not until 2009. LOL! And don't worry, I'm sure most computers released in '09 will still 100% support USB 2.

ARE YOU SERIOUS!? THATS FASTER THEN MY COMPUTER CAN CUT AND PASTE!

That means it could transfer a little bit more then my flash drive in 1 SECOND!?
It takes me like 5 minutes to transfer 800mbs right now!

Only One year to go.... >=(
