I'd go with an HP. I got a refurb HP DV8000 series laptop for $800. 17inch screen 2gb of RAM 256mb ATI video card, lightscribe, blah blah blah... the point is that HP right now has not only the best product as far as laptops go but they also have the best and most understanding customer support I've ever dealt with and I've dealt with them all. Get an HP...

It really depends... If you want a an insanely powerful laptop that can actually play games, be extremely fast, and have tons of storage, check alienware.
They use Vista, though. I was looking at this: http://www.alienware.com/Configurato...bCode=SKU-GAME Basically, max out the options, get the dual 500gb drives, plus the third 500gb drive, and you'll have one amazing laptop.

This laptop is a pretty good deal though.. $519 Dell Vostro 1500 15.4" Dell Small Business has Vostro 1500 Notebook for $519 with free shipping. * Choose Free upgrade: "128MB NVIDIA® GeForce™ 8400M GS [ Free!]" * 6.33 lbs, Intel Core 2 Duo T5270 1.4GHz, 15.4" WXGA, 2GB, 120GB * DVD Burner, Wireless 802.11g, 6-cell Battery, Vista/XP, 1yr warranty * 128MB NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS Video Card It should run the softwares you want decently.. if you upgrade to 9 cell battery.. it adds about 3/4" more.. and you have to pay $100 more also... lol

Alienware is a no go according to Chiups who used to build them. Another maker out there with the same sort of notebook build is Ace Computers. Don't do Voodoo...ain't worth it. Dell XPS might be alright. Usually the more powerful the notebook is the less battery life it has and trust me you don't want to use the ULV Long Battery life notebooks as they are not meant for photoshop. 17" notebook does kill portability because it's big and heavy. Try looking at 15.4" notebook. HP (non-compaq), Dell XPS, Vostro, Latitude and Precision, Lenovo Thinkpad are some other good alternatives. Though if you are just going 32 bit XP...get one with 3gb DDR RAM and not higher. 64 bit XP is a joke because of poor driver support.
