A new circuit being developed by scientists at Hewlett-Packard promises to do away with booting up altogether.
A computer that incorporates this new kind of memory circuit would never lose it place, even when the power is turned off. "If you turn on your computer it will come up instantly where it was when you turned it off. That is a very interesting potential application, and one that is very realistic," Williams said. Hmm, I thought the transistor was considered a basic circuit element, it's not made up of any smaller elements... Probably the use of the word "passive"...

if this was developed, i think they would haved to have a way to end the "circuit element" because compus always go go faster after RAM is wiped "restarting computer"
o wow thats a long time. pm me we can probably find some ways to speed that up. for one find your startup processes and dont let programs that you dont need at boot start at boot

Apply some preset default voltage to it.

Boot-up is pretty fast already. Though it sounds convenient, I kind of question if it would really be useful. My computer is rarely turned off anyway
. Still interesting, though.

That would be cool I guess, would probably take less power maybe?

It's a cool idea, but windows isn't the best candidate for this. I use hibernate on one of my computers and about once a week I have to do a full reboot because it just gets slow. This also will probably require some electricity while the computer is off, like stand by on XP and vista now.

This idea uses what is called non-volatile memory. Traditional ram is volatile, which means it requires power to retain data. The way they are talking about, the ram isn't cleared when the computer is shut off. The concept has been floating around for years now, but nobody has really picked it up.

Wonderful. I can't wait till this rolls out on consumer PCs. It probably only take like 20 years.
