if its for typing or writing, you can get a cheap cheap notebook.. that should be enough.. just be sure its an x2 some how.. like the cheapest is pentium duo core.. but not so good.. amd turion is another cheap alternative... most laptop not for gaming and good enough for typing and surfing webs are price ranges is about $400-$700....

It also may sound silly. But check out your local Walmart and other retailers. They usually have deals with computer manufactures to offer good computers at great pries.

The reason why Core2duo 1.4ghz roughly performs on par with AMD Turion x2 2.0ghz is because Core2duo is more efficient. Check out some benchmarks comparing core2duo and turion and you'll see that core2duo outperform amd Turion x2 with the same clock speed by about 25-30%. Core2duo usually consume less battery than Turion X2 with the same performance. If you haven't already figure it out, the processor's performance isn't mesaured by the clockspeed.

"Core 2 Duo's are all 64bit, bet you didn't know that. I believe Turions are x64 also.

I would go with the 2ghz turion over the 1.4 core 2 duo."

No, Core2duos are not all 64bit, i bet you didn't know that. All core2duos are 32bit with 64bit capabilities through EM64T code. AMD Turion x2 are not all x64bit also. AMD Turion x2 are both 32bit and 64bit. It supports both 32bit and 64bit instructions.

but battery life i don't agree.. it really depends on what are you running and if the cpu gonna be in use a lot... if not.. then battery life on both is about the same. since right now.. the battery life on a intel pentium duo core vs my intel pentium 4 laptops.. sony and the dell has about the same battery life (dell is about 4 years old)... if you do measure things by clockspeed... people usually measure in overclocking... that's all i know

All 64bit processors can run a 32bit OS.

Don't buy that overpriced ram from dell, get it elsewhere. Also, if you can upgrade the processor for under $40, I would do so.

The 8400m isn't that much of an improvement over the integrated graphics. It's not really worth the $100 extra.

totally on that... intergrated graphics no matter what.. it isn't good... not like you can actually play any modern games.. besides like 2-3 years ago games..

I said the core2duo usually use less power than amd turion x2. We both agree that these two processor uses about the same amount of power when it's idling. We also agree that core2duo uses less power at the same speed under load.
