When I said buy music, I meant digitally since a good chunk of it still has DRM. Right now, I've stopped Vista from sending M$ my info, and stopped a lot of crap I don't need but it still bugs me a bit.. Something isn't right(before you say it, in case you didn't know I put it on for Halo 2).

Really, Vista could be OK if people didn't have to do so many things to it when they first installed so it would run faster. You know it as well as I do.

And you made a typo. You said "upgrade from Windows 8 to Windows 7." Also, the change from XP to Vista is that it has a SH!TLOAD of spyware(even if you can disable it, I consider something looking at what I do and sending it to M$ spyware) you need to stop, especially if you want your PC to run faster(Windows Defender RT Scanning everything, like when you open control panel).

Vista can be OK if you know what to do with it, but if you just install it and start using it, you must have a next gen PC that could play Crysis twice at the same time at the highest resolution possible, because some things, like Windows Defender's RTS really slow your PC down.

It kind of surprises me how easy it is to turn some of these things off though...

Ah, well I've never bought music online and probably never will

I don't have any issues with the speed of Vista at all, it's been great for me since the day I installed it. The rig I upgraded from had XP on it with a gig of RAM and it sucked donkey balls, very, very slow, especially when compared to my current machine. About a month ago we had a pretty bad storm out here which knocked my machine senseless even though it was connected to a surge protector. We lost power for 3 days and when we got it back I powered up my rig and it wouldn't go past the mobo screen, couldn't even access the BIOS. I put my Vista disc in, did the "repair" option and 5 minutes later I was in the BIOS, set the boot order and had my machine up and running like new.

While it was down though, I used my old rig and my god that thing was slow, it was like going from broadband to dial up. And my new rig really isn't anything special but it sure is fast! On Vista, once I log in, it only takes like 2 seconds for my desktop to show up, on XP it was more like 5-10 seconds.

So basically what i'm saying is that I don't share your opinion that Vista is slow, mine is blazing fast!

I went to Vista for Media Center and networking. For games I usually get around the compatibility issue with older games with older video drives as some new ones screw up the textures OR using the compatibility mode. Sometimes both but most have worked right out the box with no problems.

Except for Windows 3.1, NT, 2000, all Operating Systems I have used including Linux, OSX and XP have required tweaking before I could get the most out of them. Just something that comes hand in hand with modern Operating Systems.

Read the sentence, context is key or just read the bolded part.

I just switched from using "from" to "to".

Greg,

Just one example. Not the traditional XP theme of blue and green but one of the Visual Styles from XP.

How about the Zune theme for Vista?
http://psycob.deviantart.com/art/Zun...Basic-68894025

Look a little deeper on DeviantArt and you will find. Although I am still looking for a theme based on a wood design.

UXtheme.dll files for Windows so you can use unsigned Visual Styles.

Thanks dude, the themes really look nice. Too bad they use the old XP style, but it's still nice.

And sorry, I misread what you said about upgrading to Windows 8 from the other OSs..

There are many other styles, those were just ones that use the old XP style for Greg.

On DeviantArt, click on Categories>Customization>Skins & Themes>Windows Vista Utilites>Visual Styles

OR you can click on this link: http://browse.deviantart.com/customi...til/visstyles/

That is the section with all the visual styles for Vista. Some have a redone Vista Aero feel, others something different and the one I am using has a big cat with name that begins with L feel.

As for the other thing, no worries.

Yeah I can't get the Replacer for uxtheme.dll to work. It's very upsetting.

You have to take control of the files to do so.

Get the uxtheme.dll and the other two needed ones from here, get the right one for the SP: http://www.withinwindows.com/uxthemes

Quote:
INSTALL
-------

1. Login as a user with Administrative privileges -or- have Administrative
credentials ready (check under the keyboard for a slip of paper).

2. Navigate to %systemroot%System32

3. Right-click uxtheme.dll and click properties.

4. Take ownership of the file and close dialogs. Security Tab> Advanced>Owner> Change ownership to your name, click OK. Click edit in Security Tab> and give full access to file.

5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 for themeui.dll and shsvcs.dll

6. Right-click uxtheme.dll and click properties.

7. Give yourself (or group) Full Control permissions and close dialogs.

8. Repeat steps 6 and 7 for themeui.dll and shsvcs.dll.

9. Rename uxtheme.dll to uxtheme.old.

10. Rename themeui.dll to themeui.old.

11. Rename shsvcs.dll to shsvcs.old.

12. Copy patched files into %systemroot%System32

13. Reboot (yes, this is really required)

14. Enjoy!

That is why I never figured out why they needed special computer techies to do it.

For people who are going to do it:

The only problem people will run into is driver support and needing to install vital drivers during install to get it to install correctly. Make sure you have the network drivers as XP is notorious for not setting up the network properly. Trust me, download all the drivers you are going to need and burn them to a disc to save yourself the hassle of trying to get them when you have no network access due to needing a driver.

What I meant by this was I have Windows Vista. It is an amazing OS system but the compatability with certain programs is outragous. Half my programs that worked with XP dont have a Vista run one yet.
Also Home Premium does NOT! have downgrade rights therefor all of the laptop that have built in Vista can not dowwngrade unless you upgrade to Ultimate (which has downgrade rights).

That's a software maker problem, not a Vista problem.

I was in the same boat when I had an iPod cause I used Xplay instead of iTunes and it worked lovely on my XP machine but not yet Vista compliant. Same goes for MagicTune for my Samsung Monitor, I still haven't found this program yet that's Vista compatible. It was an inconvenience, but I was well aware of the compatibility issues with Vista when I bought it so it goes with the territory.

How about you *don't* download a copy of the XP CD online, and install it OVER Vista? Just back up all your files..

Seriously, everyone is talking so much sh!t and don't seem to know you can do a fresh install..
