I mainly use BTMon and The Pirate Bay, and I've been safe so far.

You know if you do get caught, how long does it take them to find out?

So how much at risk would I be if I only download a few things, but never upload? I only use torrent to download music and I don't even use it very often.

I also use uTorrent, and will be installing peerguarding immediately.

If you're in Canada, you can download anything you want without fear of getting caught. You're not breaking any copyright laws if you download something. You only break the law when you upload.

its funny how you all think private sites are any safer than public ones. authorities can get invites just like anyone else... and most of them have open registration every once in a while. torrents are unsafe in general, use direct http links, ftp and irc if you want to stay as safe as possible.
plus you wont get in trouble for downloading unless its crazy excessive, they dont care about that ****, they want the distributors. so dont upload.

I don't consider torrents unsafe. The site I use only lets people they deem clean uploaders to upload. Private sites are much safer. You will get in trouble if with some ISP's(see above post) in the US if you just download.

Why don't you find a buddy in Canada to download to you. Give him $1 per software. The $1 is a gift to him and the content on each cd/dvd is a gift to you. I believe it's legal to "give" copyrighted item such as books, softwares, cds.

As long as you don't pay him, i think it's legal.

I usually stick to private trackers, but I didn't even know they had a list of trap sites. Good to know!

I downloaded a video by the RIAA that was sent to laywers to help the prosecute in music piracy cases(from ThePirateBay, I think). If it makes anyone feel better, Jail Sentences are usually reserved for people who sell pirated data while those who they catch just downloading and uploading are fined.

If you live in Canada, I believe that they can't do anything with you except to stop the seeders from stop seeding. I think in Canada, it's legal to download, but illegal to upload.
