Well, that depends on what you're going to use it for. There are some insanely fast/high capacity drives out for laptops nowadays, but the 7200RPM drives really are overkill unless you're gaming.
Here are some decent 5400 RPM drives (I don't know what interface your laptop uses, so I picked an ATA-6 drive and a Sata150 drive) Both are Toshiba, and both are 100GB, so it really comes down to what interface you're using.

Yeah, I've been looking into a few Toshiba HDs and Fuji, and several Maxtor/Seagate, but just really can't make up my mind.
I'm looking for something around 100 gigs, so that Toshiba looks pretty good. Thanks for the suggestions everyone. |

I love Seagate drives!! Toshiba is a very good brand too and they are the stock manufacturer of a lot of notebook drives. I have heard of people having problems with Maxtor, but never used them myself. I would say though, that 7200 RPM is not overkill. I just left the Mac iBook with a 40GB 5400RPM drive for an HP with a 100GB 7200RPM drive and it is GREAT!! When upgrading something like this, all I can say is why wouldn't you upgrade to a 7200RPM drive?

I just got for about $100 a USB hard drive from Western Digital, the cool thing is that its only the size of a laptop hard drive, durable as hell, and is powered by the USB slot (no external power source). Unfortunately, at 120 (along with the 100gb IN the laptop and my other 250gb hard drive) its to small for me, so I'm getting another one eventually. Now, if you do a lot of traveling this setup may be to inconvenient for you, but I got some velcro and attached the thing to the lid of my laptop so it goes with me everywhere.
Only downside I've run into so far is that it drains the battery just a weeee bit quicker, but nothing real noticeable.

I would not even touch a 5400RPM... Go with 7200RPM, it makes your system run much better.
