Well, you've got a bit of tough luck. Media Center used to be an XP special release, but it's included in both Vista Premium and Ultimate. It won't run on Basic; sorry.

son of a biscuit,vista basic sucks bad,first its the see through features,now this?damn....im going to buy some more ram then upgrade to premium.laptop,1gb ram,1.8ghz cpu,think if i added more ram,like 1gb per slot,2gb,i think pc would run well enough for premium.

Well, don't forget, there's a lot more to Vista than RAM; a good processor and video card are vital. Have you ever checked your Experience Score? If you can give me each sub-score, I can tell you what needs to change. It's possible that it may not even be capable of running Premium, depending.

Well, if you can, see if you can at least get an external (if you don't already) if not an internal hard drive; depending on the vendor, you may be able to updgrade the internal. The processor isn't the greatest, but it and your video card are capable of running Premium. So yeah, by the looks of it, RAM seems to be the most available options. Serious gaming might be a problem judging by the video card rating, so 2 GB ought to do it. Only get three if you really feel you can make use of it.

Vista Home Premium should work alright on that rig and give you Windows Media Center to boot.

It's really not good to skirt the line with 1 GB. It can be done, but I've heard bad things. I know a shop that never sold a Premium with 1 GB because they got too many of them back. Granted, that's largely because people expect a 1 GB to run perfectly, and it doesn't, but still, it's nice to have options. 1.5 GB of RAM would run just as well on Vista if gaming isn't involved, but it's easier to just buy another gig, and pretty cheap to boot. I don't have to worry though, I've got 3 GB on a nice Vista Business; no Media Center though. ;_;

If that is a single core processor, Don't even bother with Home Premium.

Shoot, didn't notice it was a single core. Well, I do have good news though: it is easily upgradable to a AMD Turion 64 X2. Unfortunately, that also means the jump to 64, so that may be a problem. As for other compatible chips, I don't know, but you may be able to check with your manufacturer and see what's up.

Just because its a 64-Bit chip doesn't mean you have to use 64-Bit software. Most Dual-Core processors are 64-Bit supported. The real issues would be with Overheating and the Bios/Motherboard.. In all honesty, its not worth all that effort and money to install Vista Home Premium on an outdated notebook. I would just start saving up some money and buy a computer with Home Premium already installed.

I should know that too, I know someone who runs 32 bit on a 64 bit processor. Regardless, I get the feeling that Lancer just wants Media Center and this machine is just about good enough to run Premium, aside from RAM and processor, both of which can be fixed without too much effort. Less of a committment than buying a whole new computer.

There is no guarantee it would work though. Its possible the Bios may not support Dual Core processors and even if it does the notebooks cooling system most likely wouldn't be sufficient... If he is totally focused on getting Media Center, he should just Dual Boot with XP Media Center 2005.
