Default Custom PC 2.1ch setup

Hey guys, I want to make a custom 2.1 setup for my computer and figured this would be the best place to get the info I need in order to make it happen.

What I'd like to do is utilize a pair of Infinity front stage speakers that I've had for about 10 years, but have only used for a year or two. These speakers have two drivers and a tweeter in each housing, I'd like for them to play the mids and highs, and then of course a decent subwoofer, nothing too crazy, i'm sure an 8" sub would be more than enough.

So, how do I make this happen? What do I need in order to utilize regular speakers for use on my computer? I do have a soundcard, a Creative SoundBlaster Xtreme Music IIRC. I'm willing to upgrade but don't want to break the bank, I think up to $100 for the card would be my limit.

As for the sub, i'm thinking a powered one would be the way to go but I'd be open to suggestions/ideas. But if you're gonna suggest something, be reasonable, nothing extravagant, I'd like to keep my investment to below $200 if at all possible.

For 2.1 you a cheap soundcard might even be overkill. You might be able to tweak the settings of the bass and such and see what all you can get out of it. If I was to do anything though I would take that $100 and use it to buy some 5.1 speakers.

Don't want/need 5.1 since i'm not a gamer nor do I watch surround sound movies on my comp, this is for music only. One thing I'd like my sound card to have is a digital output, other than that, it's whatever.

Well with your speakers they are pretty much maxed out to their potential. You could buy a card, but the increase in quality would be very little compared to what you would get from a new set of speakers. You could try a new soundcard though but don't expect great results.

Not too sure how you got off on this tangent, anyways. I've found out I would need an amp in order to make this setup work, I don't want to add an additional component so I think i'm just gonna go with some powered studio monitors like Behringer MS40's, that way I can run them via digital cable directly from my soundcard, when I upgrade it. I'm also gonna run a powered sub, a Dayton SUB-80, so I'll be good to go.

anybody ever use the Dayton APA150 amp?

Enough time has passed so no it is technically not a double post, though since the post has added nothing, it has been trashed.

Pretty much what I though but at the end of the day my initial post was still able to be edited so I should have done so from the get go, no worries.

I guess this is the wrong place to get hifi audio info/advice, figured it was worth a shot though

Try HydrogrenAudio, Hydrogenaudio Forums

All the deal with is audio codecs, software, hardware, etc.

Not enough traffic there, but thanks anyway. Head-Fi.org: Headphones, iPod earphones, portable audio, MP3 players, high-end audio seems to be the place to go for hifi audio stuff especially as it pertains to headphones and computer related audio
