Should be a panel on the underside that requires you to take a screw out, inside will be two slots. Basically the memory sticks slide right in and right out

Each memory slot can hold a 667mhz 200-Pin DDR2 PC2-6400 card or a 667mhz 200-Pin DDR2 PC2-5300 card, and each slot is capible of handling 2gb cards, so 4gb max ram, so if you're looking for an upgrade any of these or these.

It comes standard with 1gb already, is there something you're doing thats running into a "need more memory" error?

Computer memory upgrades for Dell Inspiron 1720 Laptop/Notebook from Crucial.com

Seems according to Crucial's tests the Inspiron 1720 can take DDR2 800 RAM, your best bet for speed and price.

Not from Crucial necessarily. Always look for the lowest Case Latency on the higher RAM clocks.

It is also quite easy to do...you remove old RAM, insert new RAM, boot up and you are done.

Even Dell's support section should have a picture or detailed walkthrough.
