Default [SOLVED] DVD Upscaling

Most of the new DVD players offer upscaling upto 1080p. My question is... can the quality 'really' be upscaled, is there really a difference between standard and upscaled?

I ask because I thought it was impossible to 'up' the quality of media once it had been created - changing the bitrate of an exisiting mp3 doesnt add quality, shouldn't the same apply here ???

The quality remains the same the image is just scaled to meet the bigger screen.

Basically, upscaling all comes down to the quality of the scaling algorithm used by the player. If it's good, the picture will look fairly good, though obviously not a true 1080p. But if the algorithm is crap, then the picture will come out looking like crap. So, if you're in the market for a DVD player and upscaling is a major factor, it's probably a good idea to do some research on how good the upscaled picture will actually look.

It does something to the image to make it look better. It doesn't just stretch it.

I have this Denon and it works great Denon USA | DVD-558
I read reviews over on AVS forums (huge home audiophile site) and when they give there nod of approval it was more then enough to pull the trigger for me. Denon, Onkyo, and Oppo are great home audio products to own.
EDIT: It looks and works great with my Samsung 720p flat screen. Of course it's no match for my PS3 Blu-Ray but not all dvds are in blu-ray .
