Default Microsoft Update w/o IE?

Is there a way to get Microsoft Updates w/o using Internet Explorer? I know of AutoUpdate, but things dont hit autoupdate at the same time as they do. MU. I can use IE, but I REALLY dont want to.

Well if you were to have Windows Vista, you could just go to All Programs -> Windows Update...

You can get that firefox add on that makes a tab internet explorer inside firefox. I used to use that because internet explorer was broken.

Paranoid much? I have never had a problem with IE security, and that is the only thing that I use. You shouldn't worry, either. Only people that are too stupid to know what they are doing should worry about security. They are the ones that go to obviously unsafe websites, click on links in phishing e-mails, and download random games from the Internet that contain viruses and/or adware.

Then all of it gets blamed on IE. It's sad that Microsoft is the victim of the stupidity of the general population.

IE complies with the acid test more than firefox 2 did, is on an equal footing with firefox 3, actually has a smaller or equal footprint, as well as, I might add, more compatibility with sites than firefox does.

Don't get me wrong, firefox isn't a bad browser, but it isn't my default browser by any means.

I would, but I'm running a 2.66ghz pentium 4 w/ 512 ram(1gb max) and my other is a AMD Turion(single core not X2) 1.6ghz w/ 2gb ram, so vista would on these.

and to the previous comments: iirc several benchmarks I have seen had IE as the slowest of the browsers, and ff3 as the fastest(2nd fast on ones that included opera)
also, if ie is so standards compliant, how come the necessity in web design is "code to standards, hack for IE"
and Netrix, your comment about how if your not an idiot it wont be a prob is largely true.

WinDizUpdate
It works with Firefox, Opera, and Netscape.

Reasons to use WinDizUpdate
  • No personally identifiable information is collected from your computer.
  • It lists just the updates you need. If an update has been superceded by a newer one, it will not ask you to install the older one.
  • Using enhanced data from MBSA, WindizUpdate will find more security patches needed for your O/S than the "other" website.
  • If there is a security issue with a component that you have not got installed, it will not ask you to update it. For example, if you have not installed hyperterminal, it will not update it.
  • It is not restricted to just Microsoft products. Software from other vendors can also be updated.
  • Upgrading to the latest version of Internet Explorer is not considered a Critical Update!
  • Works on Windows versions no longer supported by Microsoft -- Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 95
  • The plugin is not an ActiveX control.
  • Integrated download manager with error detection -- you can cancel downloads at any time, and the next time you wish to install the cancelled update, it will continue from where it left off. Only corrupted sections of the file are redownloaded.

Disadvantages
  • There is a delay from when new updates are released from Microsoft to when they appear on this site.

There are some implementations out there for updating off-line clients that would work in this situation. I'm not sure of the names of them, so you will have to look until I can remember the names.

It has worked well on my computer before, and I have an AMD Athlon XP processor and 512 megabytes of RAM.
