Default Need a new router

My router failed the other day(Linksys WRT54GS, Ive had 4 fail in recent years, im NOT getting another one) and im looking for a new one. both my laptops are G, so N is unnecessary(unless it's cheaper and plays nice w/ G) I need something reliable with good range(Is there a useful difference between 108mbps and 54mbps G routers)

any router suggestions?

EDIT: also, the PC the router is connected to is running Vista, and my laptops are running XP and Xubuntu. so it needs to work fine w/ all 3

I've heard that Netgear is a reliable brand, so I say stick with it.

Although I don't have any personal experience, my sister had one, and I haven't heard her complain about it.

ive had linksys for a while and it hasn't failed on me yet.. it's been like 4-5 years now. i'd say if u want reliability and have no problem running the wire, just setup a wired connection.

I have a Linksys WRT54G router. I hate it. I don't like it. I doesn't let me connect to Xbox Live when it's secured so I always have to have it unsecured. I really need a new one myself. That router you have now look's good. I might have to get one when my Best Buy store opens.

Linksys WRT54G IS a good router if you know how to customize it.
By trial and error set my Firewall completly off, & enabled DMZ for my desktop.
People also don't realize the WRT54Gv2 (not sure about other versions) actually runs a linux kernel for its back-end, and there are about 50-60 custom firmwares for it.
Mine that I had since 2003 stopped saving settings if it were powered off and I had to reload my configuration file everytime the power went out, so I switched to using a 2wire dsl modem/wireless router combo.

Netgear is a good brand as well as they will usually detect which connection type you're using right off the bat, their technical support is still non-us but they are pretty friendly, and they don't leave any options unavailable to change on the backend. I love configuring them more then any other router to be honest, they're just plain fun.

the WRT54G became CRAP after V.5 when they halved the ram and changed the f/w to non linux. earlier versions were pretty decent, but anything 5+ has sucked(I think they are on 7 or 8 now)

d-link is another good brand as I have little trouble with it but I have been keeping tabs on N routers because my Notebook has an Intel 4965AGN wifi.

I think I'll get an N router eventually, I really have no need right now concidering theres 12 other access points in my neighborhood. My biggest want right now is a mobile web browser thats not an iphone but just as powerful. I don't need a phone I just need a fully functional mobile web browser and maybe windows live messenger and need it to run off cell towers and not wifi without having to pay for phone service and without having to carry my huge laptop around.

That's a lot to ask for.

As for recommendations if they are still wanted, I would suggest a Belkin router because of my experience.

That was my point.

Back to the topic, though, make sure to get one with a warranty that can be used to get you a refund in case it doesn't work.
