I use AutoMkv to do that. Just google AutoMkv. to do it go to the advanced tab or whatever. its the 2nd one from the left then theres a preview button. press that and pause the video. resize the video to 4:3 ratio and set the resolution 320 x 240. then above that theres some manual crop settings press the up arrows on any of the size and on the preview screen the part cropped will be displayed in light blue. if you wanna keep the settings for multiple videos you can save that setting and load it for each video. You can also batch convert most video file types into zune format.

I'm sure VirtualDub will most likely do this. Good luck figuring it out though. It's a pretty difficult program to use in my opinion.

um....It depends
THere are 2 situations

1) Video in native 16:9 format
There is no black box to crop. The black boxes that you think you saw are empty spaces and not part of the video. If you want to stretch it, i recommend you to use windows media encoder. You just need to change the aspect of ratio to 4:3 or change the resolution to 320x240 to fit the zune's screen.

2) Video is 4:3 but appears to be in 16:9 because the author added 2 black boxes to the top and bottom of the video. I also recommend windows media encoder to do this job. There's an option in windows media encoder which allow you to crop anywhere on the screen.

I recommend windows media encoder because it can be multithreaded application and can speed up the croppying/reencoding process by up to 400% if you had quadcore computer.

You can crop vids inside windows media encoder, but jackluo923 is right. Just change the resolution to 320 by 240 and the black bars will usually disapear. But if you downloaded the videos pre converted, you may have to crop them.

If you use any WME based encoders such as encode 360 or windows media encoder, changing the resolution to 320x240 will always stretch the 16:9 videos to 4:3. If you change a 4:3 video's resolution 320x240, the video output will be the same as the input because nothing will be changed. The only way to remove the boxes is to crop them.

@Ricky
- Preview is always "not-supported" with 2 pass encoding on the first pass. You'll only be able to see the preview on the 2nd pass of the encoding processs.

- Windows Media Encoder will always encode file to .wmv. The wmv format is perfect for the zune if you know how to use it correctly.
