Default Ubuntu Booting

I finally got around to installing Ubuntu. I have one major problem, the booting time! It takes absolutley ages to load up directly from the PC or a USB stick.

Anyone one know how to stop this and also its very laggy as in applications dont open quickly.

Specs of my laptop
1.8Ghz AMD Turion 64
1GB RAM
80GB HDD (50gb free)
128 dedicated ATI Xpress 200M (ALSO can that graphics card handle Beryl)

Thanks.

Wait, I'm confused, are you booting off the PC's hard drive, or off a USB stick?

What I meant to say was I tried the USB stick and thought it was booting slow because it was through USB.

So then I tried booting directly from the HDD but again booting and general loading was too slow.

Alright. Ubuntu starts way too many services that you probably don't use on boot. This slows down the boot up, uses more memory, and slows down the shut down too. Here is a tutorial on disabling services from booting to speed up the boot process.

Alternative, you could go with Fedora 9 as it boots up a lot faster than Ubuntu.

In either case, make sure you use the AMD64 or x86_64 builds as they are optimized for a 64bit capable processor.

Techy Dude, get the Ubuntu Live CD, boot it up and play around with it. It has an option to install it from the live CD. If you can't figure it out then you shouldn't be using linux.
