The BAD_POOL_CALLER is seen for the first time after installing a hardware or software it is recommended that the computer be restarted. If it doesn’t solve the problem, the installation of the hardware or software should be checked for correction.

Make sure your RAM is the correct specs (eg. DDR, DDR2).

So it still does it when you shut down? You can call HP and tell them you want to send it in. They'll send you a free box and airbill

Heh, Compaq sucks! Maybe it's time to invest in a new laptop.

So you say Compaq doesn't suck and you get the BSOD on an one week old Compaq laptop.

Its a Compaq+Vista thing. Very long story short - My C700 notebook had issues with BSOD's and random freezing and once it started overheating HP replaced the motherboard which only made things worse(Reaching temperatures of 200-F). So they finally replaced it with a faster C700 notebook which HP shipped directly to me from the factory in China. This notebook works much better, but on occasion I get a BSOD[PAGE FAULT IN NONPAGE AREA] when waking up from Sleep mode and when windows boots and I get asked to do an Error Report to send off to MS which will only cause another BSOD[BAD_POOL_CALLER] if I say Yes. For some reason Vista keeps disabling Hibernation as well which pisses me off. I also get background processes which randomly crash and vista informs me of them - though they are never anything Vital. I'm sure if I was using a retail Vista disc or Anytime Upgrade Disc(Which they don't make anymore) I would be fine, but currently I don't have the means of getting one... The only real good thing about this is my Case Manager at HP gave me 4-years of Accidental Damage coverage which will begin 1 year from the day I got the notebook at No Charge. Which isn't bad considering the cost of that warrenty is $439.99 and the notebook cost me $300 on Black Friday.

Edit~ I would also like to point out that these issues don't happen right away and Vista will seem perfect for a few days. I've Re-installed Vista probably 7-times since last November.

Indeed, everything is Up to date. I don't have any issues finding drivers and most of my hardware gets driver updates quite frequently... I think its the fact Vista is already buggy enough(Though SP1 has helped a lot). Then Compaq goes in and puts their name and logo on everything, Installs sh!tty software and tries to make the install completely automatic. Then you make "Recovery Discs" so that if you buy a new HDD or reformat you can install vista again(along with the sh!tty software and Compaq branding).
