Default [SOLVED] splitting torrents?

since I have 2 laptops i plan to run utorrent on both of them, and I have a few ?'s

1. should I have both use the same port, or should I do diff ports for each?
2. is there a way to split a torrent(so it only grabs 1/2 the avi, to speed things up)

of course if it is several files I will just split it up half and half.

1. The different computers will be assigned different home addresses something like 192.168.1.xxx, and therefore to you will need to forward both addresses. To save on headaches it is probably best to go with two different port numbers for the two addresses. Something in the range of 49000 to 65555 would be good, don't use low port ranges as they are heavily monitored and are usually blocked.

2. You cannot split up a single file but if you have multiple files in a torrent you can set some for download and some for not. In the end, it will have little effect on the speed in the way you are thinking.

splitting them wont make them go faster. the downloads will be limited by your internet connection... you dont get double the bandwidth by downloading a torrent in 2 parts.

but each laptop will get an equally large connection, right?

5 files at 50 mbps on 1, and 5 files at 50 mbps on the other.

first of all, if you have a 100mbit connection i envy you greatly. if that is the case, yes, each laptop will get ~50mbps depending on the strength of the seeders. you wont get 100mbit on each laptop so the speed wont be any greater. the other limitation is the actual uploader's speed... if you're downloading from 30 seeds at 10k/s each on one computer, you'd only download at 5k/s per seeder if you were using 2 clients.
basically it's pointless to download torrents on 2 computers simultaneously.

No, browsing for the most part isn't as bandwidth intensive as torrenting.

I wish bandwidth was unlimited.

Say you have a 300KB/s connection and you are downloading 2 torrents.
Torrent 1 gets 150KB/s
Torrent 2 gets 150KB/s

If you have a 300KB/s connection and 5 torrents are downloading.
Each torrent gets 60KB/s

So by downloading on more than 1 computer at once, you are getting no further.

If you are using somebody else's, you will get their bandwidth. It is not right to torrent on somebody else's wifi though.
