PS3 has Blu-Ray, so it'll play games and Blu-Ray movies in 1080i provided you have them/set it up to do so.
As for a DVD player, you'll have to get an upconverter to get it to play in 1080i unless you get a HD DVD or Blu-Ray player.

You have to use component or HDMI cables and set the PS3 to use 1080i in its Video settings. Same deal with the Xbox360 if you get one. They just have to be set to what HD resolutions your TV can do and it will do the rest. Although, I don't know if the PS3 does upconversion on DVDs. If it doesn't you can always get a Panasonic, Phillips, etc. DVD player that does so.
You will only really need that HDMI connection for 1080p as a pair of good component cables will net you the same video as HDMI at 1080i. Monster is a good brand and there are a few others.

In face the PS3 Can Upscale dvd's to 1080P. And the brand of HDMI cable doesn't matter at all because they either work, or Don't work. What does matter is length - Shorter the better.
