I just got one today, here is my issue:
it came w/ a USB Y cable that goes from 1 USB A male to 1 USB A male and 1 USB A female, but I cant use it as because it seems to need to use either both USB ports(meaning I'd need a USB A male to USB A male cord) or it needs a outlet to usb for extra power. The thing came w/ NO INSTRUCTIONS(even shampoo has instructions!) and is unusable w/o something suplying power through the other outlet(I think, it may just not work, because it has no instructions) I'm going to try to return it even though it's been opened.

If I saw this when you first posted it I would have told you about that stuff. As it is the best solution for portable hard drive use is the Western Digital Passport or its Seagate cousin. 320gb model is available on Amazon.com for $169.99 and only requires a single USB slot for power and transfering, same deal for its Seagate cousin.
The rest of the hard drives are external ones that require a USB slot for transfer and a AC connection for power and for the price it is cheaper to get an INternal and put it in an EXternal case.
