Default Zune - battery icon/unresponsive

Hi, my Zune is 2 days old.

Immediately after receiving it I went through the motion of setting up the software and plugging it in via the sync cable when instructed etc.

It came up with the battery icon and the backlight, and stayed on throughout the charge (I let it charge for about 5 hours while I went to work).

I disconnected it, and the battery icon and backlight remained on. I tried to turn it on by holding down the play button. I played around with the hold button and the play button and no luck. Still unresponsive, and still nothing but the backlight with the battery icon.

I left it alone to drain the battery and try again. Meanwhile I went and picked up the AC adapter to try instead of using the PC. After it was dead, I have tried turning it on and I get a battery with an exclamation mark like intended. Good sign, or so I thought. After plugging it into the AC adapter, I left it to charge all day yesterday, came home late last night, still the backlight and battery icon on, unplugged it, and still nothing.

I've tried using all of the back button combinations and the play button, trying with both the lock switch on and off, and still nothing but a battery icon and backlight.

I'm trying for help here before spending time on the phone with tech support.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

Thank you for the help.

My new issue is that after finally getting it to charge, honestly not sure how, I can't update the firmware.

I have tried via the software both letting it detect and manually. I have tried deleting the driver and software and starting from scratch. I have tried deleting the firmware/harddrive. Also all combinations of the mentioned.

Instead I get an error where it failed, and I get the 1- Connect Zune to your PC/2 Update firmware via software messages, over and over whenever I reset the device or try to update.

Try that.

Try plugging it into another computer or an Xbox 360 even works, see if it charges or not. If it works in the Xbox or another computer just try another USB port in your computer (Even if you computer recognizes it that doesn't mean that your USB is working functionally) another thing is if you are using a USB extender or anything of that nature unplug it and let the Zune have its own port. If this doesn't work call Tech Support and request to speak to their manager since they usually speak good English. (I would look up in the thesaurus a few words for manager just to be prepared)

try a hard reset (this will delete EVERYTHING on your zune: music/movies/photos/firmware/etc)

steps

1. Press and hold the back button
2. Press up until it reboots w/ the zune logo
3. Then start pressing and holding the center "OK" button and pressing left on the control pad at the same time
4. then you must connect it to a computer to update firmware etc...

hope this helps
