Zuneboards is pleased to announce the official Zuneboards IRC chatroom.
First, foremost and completely important...
Shoutbox is not being replaced. Shoutbox is staying. So don't ask, complain, et cetera about anything relating to the Shoutbox going away or whatever, it is not. This is in addition to the shoutbox.
By the way, did I mention the SHOUTBOX IS NOT BEING REPLACED?
With that out the way,
What is IRC?
From wikipedia, since they can put it as relatively jargon free compared to myself.
Quote:
Internet Relay Chat (IRC) is a form of real-time Internet text messaging (chat) or synchronous conferencing. It is mainly designed for group communication in discussion forums, called channels, but also allows one-to-one communication via private message, as well as chat and data transfers via Direct Client-to-Client.
Channel Particulars
The server is irc.coldfront.net
The four servers of irc.coldfront.net are:
* USA - frozen.coldfront.net ports 6667 and SSL on 7778
* EU - ice.coldfront.net ports 6667 and SSL on 7778
* USA - subzero.coldfront.net ports 6667 and SSL on 7778
* USA - storm.coldfront.net ports 6667 and SSL on 7778
The EU one is located in the Netherlands.
The Channel is #Zuneboards
Channel requires a registered nick to enter. Locke's short guide includes a universal nick registration as it is universal across clients. Depending on users who submit tutorials, there will soon be tutorials guiding users through the process on a different clients.
Locke's Short Mibbit Guide and basic universal username (nick) registration:
Quote:
Go to Mibbit.com Webchat client
Set the server to Coldfront, nick to your zB username, and leave the channel as #chat for now.
When it connects, close #chat
To register your nick, use /ns register pass email
When you get the email with the auth code, paste it in. You are now registered. To log in, use /ns identify pass
To get onto #ZuneBoards, just use /j #ZuneBoards
Note, some different clients might not have shortcuts setup for /ns so /q NickServ OR /msg Nickserv OR /query NickServ might need to be used. Same issue with /j which is short for /join.
Thanks for the mibbit guide locke, i've never used irc so i was kinda clueless but the instructions were to straight forward to stuff up. I registered my nick and checked out the irc chat, pretty cool aside from the emptyness.
Catchya all on there peeps!
i like pidgin! only client I know with IRC, Facebook, AIM, YIM, MSN and features like text replace( ppl -> people)

You do realize you dont have to use that installer, right?
yes, but any company that has THAT as an installer is awful. I'd accept a few google/yahoo toolbars, but not freeze.com spyware.
also text replace is key. saves SO much time.

Change the Protocol to IRC. The username is what you want, your IRC is at the top of this page (I use subzero.coldfront.net). Leave pw blank.
Click the Advanced tab. Set your username to the same as you did before.
Make sure you are ONLINE
A "Global" window should pop up. Type /msg NickServ REGISTER *pw* *email*
You will get an email. Follow its instructions. Type /msg NickServ confirm whatever.
Next, go back to the Global menu. Type /j #Zuneboards. You're in.
Options
WHILE IN THE ZB CONVO:
Options --> Enable logging will store chats while you're online.
Conversation --> Add:
Selecting a group will let you access it from the main Pidgin buddy list
Inside of "Add Chat", you will want to select "Autojoin" and "Remain in chat after window is closed".
NOTE: When you first start Pidgin, NickServ won't let you into zB. This is NORMAL. Message Nickserv with IDENTIFY *pw*, and you'll be good to go.
To avoid having to identify, go back into manage accounts screen, click on your IRC, and enter the password of your registered account into the password area. That way, you'll automatically get identified!
