MPEG video on XBOX 360

Recently I downloaded Zune so that I could put video on my XBOX 360, I also downloaded the registry hacks so I could put MPEG video formats on to Zune, however I have had a few problems and wondered if you could help:

1) After downloading the registry hacks, Zune could add the MPEG file type to the library but could not play it, it that normal?

2) Also Is there anyway to get Zune and or the XBOX 360 to play the MPEG's?

3) If no to number 2, then how can I get myself a free MPEG to WMV/Zune converter that doesn’t just convert 50% or have a water mark.

Thanks in advance and before you say I have spent 2 hours looking though this site and Google for the answers.

Go to tools in the download section and there will be a crapload of converters along with keygens..i use Xilisoft..but any of them will do the job.

Im not too sure i dont look too much into hacks..i just make it simple. But from what it sounds like a converter would be your best way to go..but i would still keep an eye on this thread to see if other people have better suggestions.

there are programs that you can run on your computer that converts video while it streams.

they work pretty well, but they have to buffer before the video starts.

I've connected my Zune to my 360, but I haven't tried video yet.


Won't it look just awful since you'd be putting 320x240 onto (in my case) 1080i?

it did with the vids that I tried...

but some of the vids look decent on the tv

Well I think I will try the video conversion software, because at present i can view WMV on my XBOX 360 and the they don’t look to bad on my TV.

However I still don’t understand the purpose of the MPEG to Zune hack available to download on this site?

The mpeg to zune hack will only let the Zune software recognize and attempt to convert your mpeg files

However, as of the Spring 2007 update for the Xbox 360, mp4 files (with H.264 encoding) will play on the 360 and they look quite nice. That's now my preferred method.

That registry hack will make it so that the files are added to your library, and then later converted and added to you ZUne. Yes, it is normal that the program wont play them.

This Site has a program called MCEDivx360, will allow you to stream any video and feed it to your xbox 360, the only stipulation is that you have to have Media Center, if that dosn't work than i would try Transcode 360 which can be found here http://www.runtime360.com/

I don’t understand how you can stream mp4 to the XBOX 360, do you play then through the media sharing function on Zune software or another program/external device?

Sorry PityOnU should have read down the bottom , but how is it possible to convert the MPEG's once they in you Zune library or do they automatically convert when transferring to the Zune player?

Foreshigity how does MCEDivx360 work then? What does it do to suddenly make the XBOX play different media types? Also which/who's media center are you talking about? Finally what is Transcode 360, what is it an alternative to?

The media sharing should work but I don't know how well it will work with mp4s. I load up all my mp4 files (as well as music and pictures) on an external harddrive and just connect that up to the 360. It saves a lot of hassle and looks great. Depending on what you're doing, I'd recommending purchasing one for that purpose.

The mpeg hack in the Zune software will convert the videos just before they're sent to the zune. Most likely it'll spit out a "Needs Conversion" and then background convert while you sync. There's probably a temp file stored on the computer somewhere but you only see the conversion on the zune itself.
