Default [SOLVED] Odd Zune30gb Issue

Hi, the other day my Zune 30gb started experiencing an odd issue. When I unplugged my device from my PC the screen went black, from looking around this seems to be a common issue that can be solved by re-formating the drive or draining the power ect.

Although my issue is odd, the device will only show a black screen and the hard-drive clicks loudly, suggesting the drive is damged, but after around 5 minutes the device will come out of the black state and function perfectly. So I'm unsure if this is a hardware issue or software. I don't want to format the drive because the Zune software doesn't recognise the device so I may not be able to reload my music.

To confuse the issue a little more... When I unplugged the device I didn't safely unmount it, but the night before I dropped it onto a concrete pavement from a foot or two (first time I've dropped it)

Also the device crashes when I try to view the settings.

So any advice as to what I should do would be greatly appreciated, has anyone experienced this issue before?

Thanks a lot!

Darwin.

You need to reinitialize it, which will reload the device firmware and reformat the drive. http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/z...8-f5e9d8b00710

But, fix the problem of your PC not recognizing it first. Open device manager, and find the USB hub where the zune is connected and tell us what the error msg is. (Right click the exclamation point.)

And, hard drives clicking indicate a problem but not necessarily a hardware problem. the head is seeking data and not finding it. that could be just corrupt data, or a real hardware defect.

Thanks for the help.

Unfortunately I'm unable to find the error code as my PC (most of the time) recognises it, it's the software that doesn't know it's there.

*edit* I've just found the device under Portable devices with a little warning sign, the only error message I can find is this: This device cannot start. (Code 10)

Thanks.

Darwin.

Delete the zune driver in device manager. then disconnect the zune, and restart the PC, restart the zune software and connect the zune. windows will download and install a new copy of the usb zune driver.
