Unhappy Zune 30 to 80 Upgrade Issues: Broken Drives or Software?

Hi! I can't find any thread quite like this, so I'm sorry if I just didn't search thoroughly enough.

Unlike most of the threads that I've found on hard drive replacement, my Zune 30's hard drive is just fine, so I know that the Zune itself works. The problem is that I filled it up and wanted a little more space, so I bought a hard drive from a seller on ebay who apparently sells a lot of drives pulled from iPods. The drive is a samsung HS081ha (and has a lil apple logo on it) and I'm on my second one. The first gave me the C00D124F error (yikes). I reseated the cable several times before rebooting it with the old 30 back in (worked fine), back to the 80, C00D124F, of course. I believed that the drive was DOA, so I yanked it and RMAed. The new drive showed up today and I'm seeing the same problem.

My conclusions are one or more of the following:
1 this person is selling bum drives
2 this drive isn't actually compatible with the Zune
3 some sort of firmware update or something actually makes it impossible to upgrade the hard drive (I have NO idea about this and it's just a guess)

Anyone have a suggestion? If people have done this upgrade successfully recently, I'm willing to accept that this is a sunk cost with the guy on ebay (I just need to stop buying any computery stuff from that place-- never goes well) and buying from a legit supplier. But I don't want to throw more money at the problem unless I know that an upgrade is possible.

Thanks and Hi!

Thanks! Had them bookmarked but decided to go cheapy I knew better than to do that, I've never, ever had good luck buying computer parts from ebay.

Using the google machine, all I could find in reference to that drive and the zune were complaints about it not working (but only 1) and a BUNCH of sites selling it for the zune. It's odd that if it worked that there wouldn't be anyone raving about it.

I sent a message to the seller who is still selling these drives as Zune compatible (polite and informative) that these drive just might not work with any Zune. I bought an enclosure for it, because it is my fault for not looking into it a bit more deeply.

It's quite possible that if these are being pulled from iPods, they aren't formatted correctly for zune, have some strange iPod firmware, or...? I have no idea if Apple formats hard drives in the same way Microsoft does... The master boot record could be completely different, there might be something completely different than the FAT, etc.
