The eReader is notoriously buggy. I was forced to stop using it after downloading an ebook took hours. Use one of the many on this site. Their are a few good ones on this site. It might take a little more work but it's still faster than the official app.

I was actually just messing with the Zune eReader the other day. I think the original FeedBook catalog may have changed or updated because no matter how times I tried I'd just get that error message. I even tried other catalogs, to no avail. Runewake2's right, the readers from here are the better choice. I recommend "Book Reader" by amertak or "E-Book Reader" by kirarulzz.

Kirarulzz is pretty good in my experiences with it. The official app was really nice when the catalog worked simply because you could download books straight to your Zune, but other than that it kinda sucks

you could look at my thread, i got the app working.... well kind of lol still works though and you could only out 10 books which is lame here
