So, I have two Xbox 360s that I'm trying to make one work and I need suggestions.
Xbox #1:
Shocked by a power surge and will run for 30 minutes (tops) before it gives red rings. The DVD drive works fine in it.
Xbox #2:
Boots up, firmware runs fine, BUT when you put a disc in the DVD drive, it reads it as a DVD and not a game.
I took them both apart and put the DVD drive from Xbox #1 into Xbox #2, figuring it was just a problem with the drive. I plugged it in and turned it on and popped a game into it and it did the same thing.
Every xbox disk drive is 'bonded' to one xbox motherboard. I don't think there is anything you can do. I tried it once. I couldn't find anything. Supposedly there is a modchip that can do it, but I couldn't ever get anyone to confirm that.

You are actually wrong, depending on the model you can switch them out, I just did it 2 days ago.
What you need to do is have the Xbox on its side, put the game in, eject it, then put the Xbox so it is vertical, that "should" fix it.
Okay, squirtle. I don't know how well Nick's solution will work. But by all means try it. Maybe try swapping the boards from the DVD drives. I wasn't ever able to do this because I had one xbox without one, and one xbox with a broken mobo.
