I thought buying a zune pass would mean I got to continue the good experience I had during my trial. If this can't get resolved is there any way I can get a refund?

If it fails on both, it now means whatever the root cause is, your device content is expiring. If you have tried the DRM reset tool and that fails, and if you are sure you are linked to your zune account (so device music can relicense) AND you are logged in on the software to the account with the zune pass, then the issue is not with the pass or the zune or zune software. It's something broken on your PC... like some windows dll.
