Default Rumors of Windows Phone to unify with other Windows branches

If you've been paying attention to Windows 8 news at all, you'll know that Microsoft is adding support for ARM processors, the kind that smartphones and tablets run on. Microsoft wants to have Windows run well on the leaner packages tablets must be in to be popular, which is what an ARM processor is suited for. But tablets are only one part of the mobile equation, what about Windows Phone?

Well, the going rumor is that Apollo, the high-end update expected late in the year will no longer be running on the CE kernel. The Windows CE kernel has long been the one of choice for mobile devices by Microsoft, such as in Windows Phone, Windows Mobile, and even the Zune (you can even run straight Windows CE in that with the Liberate app). Apollo is said to be switching to a version of the NT kernel found in Windows 8, using its most basic functions to run the rest of Windows Phone much like CE does now. It will also dispose of the .NET Compact Framework, another name that should be familiar to Zune users as the basis of XNA which made certain kinds of applications impossible, in favor of something called Core CLR.

As with any rumor, the source needs to be called into question, and in this case it is a Russian smartphone forum. Not exactly what you imagine as the go-to place for official Microsoft news. On the other hand, at least this rumor has a believable premise as it fits in with Microsoft's ongoing game plan as we've seen with Windows 8 thus far. Folding Windows Phone under the main umbrella would be the next logical step. Interesting to think about the possibilities, at the least.

There goes my ability to make VB.NET apps (granted this is true).
