Default Metro Studio helps developers make polished icons for their apps

A simple fact of life is that one person can't be good at absolutely everything. A very good programmer may not have the time or desire to invest in learning how to create graphics for their apps. Sometimes they have a team and someone in that group has the necessary skills, sometimes they reach out to the community and ask for work, but if those don't work or just aren't an option, you're stuck doing it on your own. Wouldn't it be nice if there was a simple tool to make icons?

Well, there is, and it's called Metro Studio, courtesy of Syncfusion. The program provides hundreds of basic templates and allows you to control the shape, size, and color of how the icon is arranged, and can export in numerous formats, from .ico to .png to .xaml, the latter of which is the most important for Windows Phone developers. All of these graphics are vectors, which allow for infinite scaling without loss of resolution, but it also enables one handy feature you may have noticed some apps using before: altering the color of the tile based on your theme. You can use these however you wish, including selling apps on the Marketplace using them, for free. The only stipulation is that you don't use them in a way that competes with Syncfusion (including them in another icon compilation, for instance).

For all that good, there are some downsides to consider. The biggest issue is that you can't import your own vectors into the program or use it to create anything other than editing the samples already included with the simplistic tools. If you can find something in that library that fits your app, it's a fine tool. If you don't see anything that you like though, you're back to learning a full-featured graphics program. Metro Studio doesn't do a whole lot, but what it does it does very well, and it's worth a look if you're a developer looking to get an icon done quick and easy.
