Fellow members, I would like to present an idea for a secondary OS for the Zune HD. Open ZDK might allow for a rebooting app that enters the Zune into an OS that allow advanced settings changes, or changing song names from the Zune. This might eliminate a need to keep syncing with your pc. This is only a suggestion, and I am still just beginning to develop basic sprite and text output apps.
With a significant amount of hacking this might be possible, but then you risk running a program within a program which would end painfully. If done the OS would be slow and chunky, even if done well. The zune was developed and perfected over years of work by a team of professionals. I doubt that a group of two or three hackers could make something better.
Yes, it's possible to emulate some sort of Linux environment, but the ammount of resources availbe to the emulator would be very limited. Edit: I wonder if there are user accounts in openzdk, or if you create new ones.
Mymaininspiration was the secondary startup for reinstalling the firmware. I had an idea for a complicated mix of deploykits and pc apps to make a separate OS instead of an open zdk app, but decided this, if possible, would require too much complication.
i found something by the all powerful netrix called remote-zune which is a good solution if you have a constant internet connection and the willpower to leave your pc on for long periods of time, you can check it out, in fact i did this reply using it. It jist allows you to remotley access your pc, an outstanding piece of open zdk work
