Is Zune-to-Zune multiplayer even a possibility for XNA applications? I'm rather new, and would like to pointed in the right direction.

I'm guessing that's a no...

Also, does the multiplayer work if your not in the same area as somebody else you are playing with?

Yes, it is possible. I don't think there are any third party Zune HD games that use this feature, but there were some made for older Zunes.
