Has anybody hacked a compression or volume limiting control? Some tracks are noticeably louder than others. My F-150 had a button labeled "compression" that kept all the tracks the same volume.
I use mp3gain for mine. I make all the mp3's db at around 99.0. That is normal for todays music. If you see some before you trim them at 89.0 remove them out before changing because they will sound staticy. Songs that have piano playing or some acoustic will have to stay lower (89.0 db), but almost all will at 99.0. Oh, the older 80's and early 90's music will be considerably lower, so bring those all the way up to 99.0.
